whats the optimum spoke size(thickness) for a profile hub and a monty rim?
i’m going to need to tell my wheel builder as soon a i get my profile hub.
i was going to go as thick as possible for extra strength, is this actualy the best idea? i’m not as bothered about weight savings as i am about durability,
however, i suspect that fatter spokes would be less elastic, thus putting more stress on the rim and hub. does this realy matter in the real world?
if the biggest fattest spokes are indeed going to be best, is it possible to get tapered spokes that are as wide as the rim takes on one end and as wide as the hub takes on the other?
has anyone had parts fail because of the wrong spoke size?
I’ve got 2 mod wheels both with Monty rims. The first one has 13g spokes and
the second 14g. Both are still very much alive and kicking.
The first wheel was built up for me by Leo White with 13g spokes. At the
time I didn’t realise quite how much work he’d put in to the wheel - the
Suzue hub spoke holes weren’t wide enough for 13g spokes and so had to be
drilled out to. Thanks Leo!
When it came to the Profile wheelset I had much the same ponderings as you
and, in the end, went for 14g for my Profile wheel for the following
reasons:
The spoke holes in the Profile flanges are only big enough for 14g
spokes. I was building the wheel myself and didn’t fancy trying to drill out
said holes on such an expensive piece of kit having never done something
like that before. Perhaps your wheel builder can drill out a hub no problems
in which case this won’t be an issue for you.
Trying to get the spokes in the right length wasn’t an easy task. It
wasn’t impossible but I’d have been looking at a long wait time - patience
isn’t one of my strong points when it comes to new toys It just so
happened that I could get some 14g spokes in the length I needed so that
sealed it for me.
Patience aside, I looked at trying to get spokes that were 13g at the rim
end and 14g at the hub end. DT Swiss did these as I remember but not in
short enough lengths for a mod wheel.
Perhaps not the most convincing reasons for going with 14g spokes… but the
final wheel has had no problems at all.
If you do go with 14g spokes and a Monty rim you’ll need to either get thick
nipples or insert eyelets in the rim so the spokes don’t pull through the
rim holes. I used some 5mm (I think they were 5mm but check anyway) eyelets
from a fabric store for this.
I would contact John Drummond because his standard spokes for the Mod wheel
are now high quality 14 gauge spokes (the high quality bit counts for a lot
when it comes to spokes) and they are fitted with special nipples supplies
by Monty which are 12 gauge. This would solve your problem in one go.
