Onza 2.5 20" Tyre

Just wondering if anyone’s tried, or even heard of the Onza Bikes 20" x 2.5"
trials tyre @ http://www.onzabikes.com

I was told Onza were set to blow Monty away this year in the 2 wheeled trials
world and when I said, “Yeah but how fat’s the rear tyre?” my ears immediately
pricked up when “2.5” was the reply. From the site it doesn’t say what sized rim
it needs - a fat one nae doubt but that’s as much as I know.

Cheers, Neil

Re: Onza 2.5 20" Tyre

Hi there all…

Neil brought up a good point here, I have been in touch with the main Onza
importers in to the UK and they do not import the rims separately. They will/are
going to for us. This is good because the tyre and rim are reputed to have a
better sidewall and tread than the Monza and also are meant to fit the rim VERY
tightly unlike the Monza. They will not be available until about BJC, so come
along and assess them. They should also be a lot cheaper!

Good one Neil

Roger

I’ve gone to the Onza site but they have no specifications nor a photo of the
tire. Does anyone have additional info on this tire?

What is a “Monza” anyway?

Re: Onza 2.5 20

If you go to the Onza site - http://www.onzabikes.com - and head for the “bikes”
section. Click on either the T-Mag or T-Pro. These names come from my shaky
memory but look at either of the last 2 of the 4 bikes listed anyroad. They both
definately have the 2.5 rear tyre - check the “picture” link for a shot of each
of these bikes.

You’re right - there ain’t no specs on the tyres anywhere obvious but they do
look like they’ve got a big air volume so, depending on the outer and inner
diameters (or is that radius I can never remember), the rim may be a standard,
if fat, 20" size. I imagine this probably isn’t the case and they take a smaller
rim like the Monza… erm… Monty does.

I’ve emailed Onza asking for the exact specs and I’ll post them if and when they
reply. Maybe Roger knows… Roger any ideas?

>From what I’ve heard Onza are keeping their profit margins low in a bid to
sell more units. “Too many trials companies have been selling bikes and
accessories at over inflated prices for too long and Onza want to put a stop to
this”, was something nearer what I heard but it’s the same difference  So,
although their bikes and components are cheaper than the likes of Monty, we
could be on to a good thing - especially if the sidewall and rim are better as
Roger was told.

Cheers, Neil

Any Alternatives to the Onza 2.5 20"?

Why does both Monty and Onza make tires for their special rims? Can’t they use
standard 20" rims? If you need to purchase a special rim, then the tire and then
respoke your wheel, fewer people will purchase the tire, don’t you think?

The next best tire, if Onza requires a special rim, is the Maxxis MaxxDaddy htt-
p://www.maxxistires.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/bike/tires/maxx.html?L+scstore+pgi-
p3370+984086098 or the Maxxis HolyRoller http://www.maxxistires.com/cgi-bin/Sof-
tCart.exe/bike/tires/holy_roller.html?L+scstore+pgip3370+984086098 both of which
fit a standard 20" rim and both are about 2.25" wide. Both are about $16US. It’s
not expensive and you need not purchase another rim and respoke.

Does anyone know of a tire that fits a standard 20" rim and is fatter
than 2.25"?

P.S. Onza has not replied to my e-mail asking for written specs on the tire.

Why would we want them to fit VERY tightly? I don’t own anything I can’t take
apart with my hands. If I did I’d have to take tire levers on the trail, and boy
does that sound exciting.

Yes the rim is a special, I think an inch smaller although I am not sure.

No, no idea, they just gave a verbal specification to me.

Re: Onza 2.5 20" Tyre

The main criticism I have heard about the monza (and I have noted this myself)
is that the tyre and rim are a such a slack fit that the tyre does not sit
evenly on the rim. This is the reason that the tyre will not fit in some 20"
frames that it would otherwise - because the tyre’s profile is not even. It is
not felt on riding but can not be good. I am sure that the Onza tyre would be
removable, just normal good tyre tightness.

The other tyre I have noticed the same slackness is on the Coker, the tyre that
came with the Coker was reasonably tight, but the replacements have been super
slack - so much so I could slip my fingers under the tyre with no air in the
inner tube. Several times I have had to re-seat the tyre on pumping up to get it
to be even on the rim. Not good.
