one week and four days

Hi, Thanks to the inspiration provided by this group, I purchased my first uni a
week ago last saturday. I had looked for quite a while and stumbled onto one in
a bike shop. Anyway, I don’t know any orgs around here to seek out for help. I
am wondering about adjusting the seat height. I seem to remember something about
knee almost straight for a bike. That’s what I used for the uni. Any
suggestions? I’ve been on it for at least a few minutes each day and figure
Christmas might be a good goal for a real ride. By the way, I figure this is an
indication of entering my second childhood, I’m 42.

Congrats on your new uni! The seat height sounds right, All your weight should
be on the seat without feeling like your squating. (knees slightly bent)

You might be surprised how fast you learn!

Keep at it!

Wait a minute, wait a minute … it took me forever to learn. Specifically,
several weeks to go unaided reliably down the sidewalk (which stretched about 20
feet (6m) before ending in gravel). Since he doesn’t have somebody at hand to
point out little tips, it could take a similiar time period, so let’s not get
unreasonable expectation here.

Maybe I was a slow learner (my elementary report card listed me as ‘needs
improvement’ in the coordination area), but I’m fairly decent at it now -
backwards, idling, juggling clubs while riding… working on one-footing it now.

Also, I heard, and it seems true, that keeping the seat lower is easier for
learning, as your center of balance is naturally lower. You do want some bend in
your leg at the most extended point, but not so much as to prematurely tire you
out. I think all of this is in the FAQ. I know tips for learning to ride are.
