one girl band Joanna Newsom

I want to share this with you all. I know we don’t all have the same taste in music, I just thought this was very different, and good.

She is very interesting.
I like it.
She sounds like a strange little girl.

The voice reminds me of Bjork kinda, specially in another video. I like her harp playing, reminds me of some of the stuff I do.

Its good.

Her music and lyrics are quite intriguing.

Her singing… hmm… very unique.

At first, my ears wanted to tear off my head and run away in disgust.

Hearing the next song, my ears stuck around, but cowered in the back corners of my skull.

I think they may learn to like her.

Thanks for sharing!

For some reason, her singing and music reminded me of Hurricane Smith. I had a 45 rpm of his song, “Oh Babe, What Would You Say,” when I was young. It’s a great song and I love the way he does it.

My girlfriend loves her. Personally, I have to almost force myself to like it. I could probably get used to her though.

Well…as Jason said, the music and lyrics are very lilting and easy on the ears.

Her voice definitely seems like an acquired taste…although, I did like some of the qualities of it. The immaturity of it is almost haunting, like I’m trapped in a lifesize dollhouse and am lost in a maze of pink-walled corridors…kinda sucks you in.

I have to wonder if she intentionally makes her voice sound so very young when singing, or if it really is just her default singing voice…

When you hear her talk, its a lot softer and more mature sounded, and if she sung in her talking voice, I think it would sound better.

Right now it sounds a little nasally and a bit closed from being a open singing voice.

Then again, thats what makes her stand out, and the awesome harp playing.

I’m a cheerful pirate

And after discovering this gem of music a few days ago, I Bit torrented her discography.

That is her real singing voice. It’s like that in all her work. I agree it sounds sorta nasally, and seems child like. A bit mono tone shrill high pitched, in some of her other songs, it’s worse. Like an especially ambitious child was given a tape recorder for Christmas.

That said, I love her. Great music is never written in an average voice. Or at least, not often.

Think of the best of Dylan, Neil Young, Jonnie Mitcheal. No one can do anything better then covering (copying ) those songs. The imperfections of the song writers voice are so integral to the music that the music needs it. It can’t be covered by Paris Hilton. It must be sung in the voice of the composer.

In this sense, Joanna Newsom has made a great classic that shall endure. It was written by her to celebrate her voice. And it’s not easy to write such a great song when you have her voice!

Wow thanks, if you like that i suggest “Ms John Soda” and “New Buffalo”

if you like Joanna’s stuff check out CocoRosie from New york as well as New Buffalo as unicyclist.ca suggested (strange you’ve heard of her because she is a bit of an undergroud Australian Artist called Sally Seltzman- married to one of the ‘Avalanches’ dj’s). I preferred ‘the last perfect day’ to her most recent release though. Have fun with your new music finds

“Odd” is the right word. I have quite a taste in a lot music which includes Bjork and The Cranes (similar-ish vocals) … but this is just too strange. Her voice is rather freaky. Couldn’t sit through and entire song. Then again, each to their own

Now… where did I put that Edge of Sanity album…

Purgatory Afterglow or Crimson or…whatever -> GREAT STUFF

For similarly wierd sounding singers/chicks who do their own thing, I would recomend Chara (japanese), Kimya Dawson, and as mentioned before, her voice definatly reminds me of Bjork.

Her voice reminds me too much of Nikki Payne, to be able to take her seriously.

OMG!! I love her!! right now, her and Cecil Taylor are my favorite songwriters. Of all time. Yay!!

but Bjork’s voice dossn’t hurt your ears

funny you say that because I love New Buffalo more than I could love a human baby.

Sometimes.
