I was digging through a file drawer and found the receipt for my Schwinn giraffe unicycle and owners manual filed away (mom saved it for me). I got it on 11/23/1979 for $132.95 from a Schwinn dealer in Corvallis Oregon. Cool. But those are 1979 dollars. In 2002 dollars the giraffe would be $328.35.
The giraffe has a sticker on it for Scott’s Schwinn Cyclery in Salem, but it was purchased and picked up at Vunk Schwinn Cyclery in Corvallis. When I was going to OSU I don’t remember a bike shop in Corvallis with Vunk in the name so I think they’re out of business.
Amazing you still have the receipt and owners manual. I have collected lots
of Schwinn unicycle owners manuals at swap meets over the years.
I still have the receipt for my first unicycle from 1983. The unicycle hangs
in my shop along with other unicycles to show people unicycle development
from the 1960’s to todays current models. Most of the parts were upgraded or
replaced on it in the first year… ya, it was a Norco.
Keep the receipt and owners manual in a safe place John !

I got mine for $119.99 on 2/11/80 from my local Schwinn shop in Livonia, MI.
Their store decal is still on there. Though I won’t admit if I saved the
receipt, I have a picture of it being ridden on that day:
ya,i’ve never heard of anything Vunk but Scott’s in Salem is still here although its a little farther down the block since, overhead grease screens in the bar/kithen next door lite the whole place on fire including all the cycles next door a couple years ago.
I bought my used Schwinn giraffe from Brett in Livonia Michigan many years ago
at a mini-meet. I didn’t buy it to ride it, just to have it to collect.
I also bought my first unicycle in November and rode it all winter.
It’s a good time to ride because you don’t sweat as much when your learning.
