Hi,
In the tradition of “Unicyclists know everything” I thought I would go a little off topic and ask for help here please.
My PC is dead & I think it is the on-board video, so I got hold of a fairly old graphics card to try & fix it.
I believe the card is an AGP type card & I thought my PC had an AGP socket but as you can see from the photo it is never going to fit… The white socket also shown is a normal PCI socket.
Thanks in advance for all your input, help, comments, jokes, etc.
GWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! OH-MAN!! My friends in my geek Club are gonna love this!! Heheh. jk! You’ll need to get a new video card, there aren’t any adapters or anything to change from PCI to AGP and vise versa. I wish there was, maybe I’ll make one… anyway, yeah, return that video card if you can and get a new one. What kind is it anyway? Maybe I’ll buy it off you if it’s better than the one I got… O_o I’m looking for a Processor, too. Well, good luck with whatever it is that you chose to do! I did the samething once before, but I got my video card from Fry’s and they mislabeled the thing, so I got a better video card in exchange plus like $20.
Edit: I forgot to add that only certain video cards are compatible with certain motherboard’s (mobo’s). You might have to take the mother board off and reposition it with the case. Or you can do what some people do, take out the mobo and all the parts and lay them out on a dresser or something similar (flat and sturdy) and use it like that, this way all the parts are not contained in a small area, plus it’s cooler, temperature wise. You may also want to get a new tower, the old ones aren’t built for some of the newer hardwares. Well, I’m not sure if I’m completely correct with what I’ve told you, but I’m sure it’ll help.
It looks like the video card is just too long to fit on the motherboard. I don’t know though because the picture is too close!!!

it is not cooler. Cases are designed to maximise air flow and a good case will have more airflow then letting your computer sit on your desk.
I’m not convinced that’s an AGP port, or if it is it’s an older incarnation that is obsolete. AGP slots are further in on the motherboard than PCI slots, so that card would fit in on your photo.
I would think the only option to let you see things again would be a PCI graphics card; the performance will be much slower if you play games or DVDs or the like, but at least it’ll work.
No such thing as a PCI-AGP converter exists, Item; AGP connects to the system in a totally different place than the PCI bus.
Phil
This is a photo of a motherboard with the AGP port in the right place…
Some motherboards have an AMR (Audio Modem Riser) socket one at the top end of the slots on the motherboard; it’s brown in colour and about half the length of the other sockets. Your motherboard almost looks like it has two of those instead of an AGP port… are there two separate brown sockets, or is it one long one?
Thanks very much for all the responses here, looks like Phil & Adrian are right.
The motherboard is a MicroStar MS-6178L/M about 4 years old but I managed to track down the manual for it and carefull reading reveals the following line of information in the specification:
AMR (Audio Modem Riser) Slot for an AC97 Modem (Not used)
Fortunatly I only borrowed the video card so I am not out of pocket
Thanks again guys, I will now see what pci graphics cards I can find…
