Norton conflict with Media Player

A few days ago i bought and installed Norton Internet Security 2005 (includes AntiVirus, Firewall, Privacy Control, etc) and I havent been able to watch the Windows Media Player clips i could before. It says something like “The system cannot locate the resource specified.” Does anybody know how to fix this? Any help would be much appreciated.

I don’t have any experience with Norton Internet Security so I can’t give any specific help. The general thing to check would be to make sure that the firewall is not blocking Windows Media Player from connecting to the internet. Windows Media Player likes to connect to the internet to check what codec you have, check for album information, and check other things. See if this support document helps: Scanning for Internet-enabled programs in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall

I agree with JC that the problem is probably not widespread, or Symantec and Microsoft would probably have tech support pages about it. Your firewall settings may not be allowing WMP to access the Internet.

I had different problems with Norton Internet Security 2005. It was apparently a “compatibility” problem with Norton Internet Security 2004. I was unable to uninstall the 2004 version to the satisfaction of the new one. I spent many hours trying to do it, including reading all of Symantec’s help on the subject. Why do we have to uninstall their old products to install the new ones? Other products can do this as part of their install process.

I ended up having to wipe my computer and reinstall Windows. My system was due for a cleanup anyway, but I should be able to choose when I want to do that, not have to just to install some software.

I’m running Windows 2000 and have not noticed any issues with WMP.

Thank you both very much for your advice. That link really helped; I got it all working now.
