no uni for me for a while

this morning when i was uniing to class i started to go “crazy fast” and then when I started to down hill and i was going to fast and my legs could not spin the 102mm cranks that fast. i felt myself go down and knowing i was going way to fast to run it out i instinctively went into a roll.

This would have been all fine and dandy but i was waring a large schoolbag with a couple binders and textbooks. My left hand went down and directed my body to roll over my right shoulder I landed on the shoulder and then i could feel the road pulling at my jacket hard but i was not rolling the large backpack prevented my body from going into a proper roll. this resulted in all the breaking forces of a wool overcoat on rough pavement to go directly into my shoulder.

I got up sore but i thought it was just from the impact. I walked the uni the rest of the way to school but had lots of pain taking off the backpack and my coat. at this point i looked at my shoulder and it looked lower than it was suposed to be and had a huge lump sticking out which turned out to be my collar bone. I went to the hospital thinking i had dislocated my shoulder and two painful hours later they told me that it was not dislocated but i have ripped all the ligaments in the front of my shoulder connecting to to my collar bone. I will need surgery to fix this and it hurts like a insert favorite vulgar word!

I am now on T3s and anthrotec and will be out for a while. My surgery is tomorrow at 1:00

The moral of the story is don’t ride faster than you can run if waring a large backpack! I think i will go back to 127s for my road wheel.

Wow. So sorry to hear that you had an injury that’s going to result in surgery. Hope you heal up quickly. When I was learning I UPDd too fast to run it out and broke my collar bone. Even though you’re not going to be riding for a while, stay in touch here on the forums.

ouch it sounds like it hurt really bad, I’ll take your advise. I will also pray for you that your surgery goes well.

hug sorry to hear.
that sounds awful painfull.
How long will you be out of action for?
you shall have to take up cooking.

ow, that must of hurt a little more than a bit. Hope you heal fastish, or better hope you heal fast

Thanks for the concern guys. I will talk to the surgeon or a doctor tomorrow after they fix me up and see for how long i will be out. I can’t drive while on the pain meds so I will be biking quite slowly everywhere i go for a while.

As for cooking; i have some elk tenderloin thawing in my fridge. Supper will be good tonight

You could uni slowly? Unless you arn’t that great and need both arms to ballence I sopose.

That is true, i ride mostly with both hands on the handle so one armed balancing would be OK but the roads are still half covered with ice and any kind of movement hurts my shoulder. I can ride very smoothly on my Xtracycle (cargo bike).

Also not sure what codeine and diclofenac do to ballance:)

Lol, i predict a mean meal of sorts!

damn meds, they will get you extra drunk though? i remmeber after my nose reconstruction i had a few beers at a friends and it was crazy.

dont ride to slow, you will fall over :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow… Sorry you’ve been hurt. I wish you a speedy recovery

Thanks for the advice about not going fast while wearing a heavy pack. You’ve spared some of us the same fate I’m sure.

That sucks but hey man BE PROUD of that i would be:D get well soon

I’m wishing you a speedy recovery and successful surgery.

What size unicycle were you riding?

So the collar bone is not actually broken?

Yeah, we’re all wishing you a speedy recovery!!

I was wondering if this was a Coker, too?

The surgery went well??

Billy

I don’t have a coker yet but the nimbus 36 that I ordered is supposed to finally arrive here next monday. My unicycle at the moment is a 26” Yuni MUni frame a 27 X 1 ¼ wheel off an old 12-speed roadbike and 102mm cranks. It is all decked out with camo tape, a handle built from pieces from the bike and a full fender.

There are no broken bones (for which I am grateful). After the X-rays a nurse came into the room and said, “So your arm is better now eh?” because the X-rays did not show a dislocated shoulder. I replied “Uh no” because It was just getting slowly more and more painful to sit there and hold my arm. I told the nurse this and eventually a doctor came. The doc told me that my shoulder was not dislocated but it was lower than normal because all the ligaments that hold it up were torn and they would need to be re-attached to the collarbone

The surgery is tomorrow at 1:00 i will tell you guys how it went once it happens. I am sort of curious as to how they are going to fix this.

ERIC

Dude that sucks so much I hope you recover really fast…

i’m very sorry for you man. i really hope that you heal up quickly and can start riding again.

Wow…nasty wreck. Something I’ll take heed to as I’m looking to get about the same set-up (26" muni with new, faster wheelset). Hopefully you’ll be healed up enough for that 36" before too long!

Bummer, what is it with people crashing from going too fast lately???
I am lucky i didnt break my collarbone from my recent bike crash.
Sorry to hear that you actually did the full deed :frowning:
Sorry to go a bit off track, but is it much harder uni’ing with a backpack on?
Prays you have a speedy recovery
J

Ouchie, torn ligaments…

I hope you recover fully. Did they tell you how long the operation is supposed to be? Will they put you to sleep or just local anaesthesia?

update

So I said that i was going to have surgery today but turns out it was a surgical consultation to figure out what all will have to be done. I have a type 5 separation which means that the collarbone and scapula (part of the shoulder blade) are separated by quite a bit. I have also ripped 3 out of the 4 ligaments that hold my shoulder together.

The surgery will be on monday at 2:00. I am getting a pin put in that will be removed after 12 weeks and they will try to re-atach the ligaments but may need to take some from my leg if they are too damaged.

I really hope that they don’t need to take any ligaments from my leg

Wish me luck
