To be honest I’ve never really liked WinAmp. It takes too long to load and doesn’t play all my movies (and yes I realise I could probably have found some things to make it play them).
I use The Core Media Player. I really like the layout and all the controls, etc. Plus you can search your playlist.

The right tool for the job… In winblows I use the Windows Media Player for vids, and Winamp 5 for music… It’s like an old friend… comforting…
Of course, it’s really moot since I haven’t been in windows in almost a fortnight now…
Winamp rocks. It can happily sit there at the top of the screen using a fraction of the memory and processor that WMP does; it looks far prettier and can be made to do practically anything extremely easily. I have a load of plugins installed; if there isn’t one available it’s not all that difficult to make your own. I can control mine through a terminal or web browser, it records what I’ve played to work out what I like, and pops up the name of the track when it changes at the top of the screen.
You can search the playlist, too…

Winamp whoops all your asses! You better recognize!
In my not-so-humble opinion Winamp put out their best software in version 2.9. It loaded quickly, had tons of cool plugins and didn’t take much CPU time to run.
After that version Nullsoft went overboard with the bells and whistles and the software bloated into some crap that performs as poorly as Windoze Media Player or RealPlayer. Blecch.
What the hell is wrong with everybody? Why can’t I just have my plain vanilla media player? I don’t want to see any acid-trip visuals, I don’t need to equalize my audio over 47 1/2 bands, I don’t care to categorize my media by the artist’s shoe size and FERCHRISSAKES STOP hijacking my attention with some stupid startup clip, splash screen or home page.
JUST BUMP MY MOTHERF*CKING SNOOP DOGG BIATCH!
Oh, sorry. Was I ranting again? There isn’t a hell hot enough for software developers.
True that. I still use version 2.9 because it’s so fast and perfect for playing music. If it’s not broken, why replace it?
I don’t like Winamp much either. I use Windows Media Player for videos, and MusicMatch Jukebox for music.
MusicMatch rools.
Winamp 2.98 for life!
But not long ago I went to version 5. Somethings are a little nicer, but now it takes longer to load, crashes, and some other whacky things.
I use 2.80
Winamp still rocks in MY system.
(but I have digital Nvidia soundstorm)
So, if you look at the release version I use, I could care less than nullsoft is no more. Cuz, I dont need that bloatware that appeared in the later releases.
Although, it might be time for us ‘users’ to download plugins off the website before it dissappears.
<pedant mode ON>
- If you read the article on my “YAY and W00T” post you’ll see that Nullsoft and hence Winamp are not dead after all.
- “Could not care less” is the phrase you were looking for…

(just in case it should be turned off )
I have to admitt, I didn’t read the entire thread …
(not enough time before work sorry )
I no longer use Winamp but I saw this article about a Winamp security hole so I thought I’d post it here so fellow unicyclist don’t get caught out.
