I was browsing around some bicycling links while watching the Tour de France and found an escalator system installed for bicyclists to go up a steep hill.
There is a video on the official site that explains the contraption.
And a YouTube video with no commentary or explanation.
A neat contraption but I’m not sure how a unicycle would be able to make use of it. Unicyclists would be forced to ride up the hill passing all the bikes.
I found out about that lift by somehow ending up at a blog by The Cycling Dude. He blogged about the lift on June 11, 2007. Odd where you end up with random but focused browsing sometimes.
hmm
weird
it seems totally lame. it only goes a little faster than the people walking and it seems that it would take a lot of effort just to keep you leg extended all the way up the hill.
I’m still scratching my head about the Trampe Lift. I’m not sure what exactly to make of it. The whole idea is just weird.
It doesn’t help the people walking since it’s designed to push someone on a bike. All the cyclists are wearing regular walking shoes so they could comfortably walk their bike up the hill (they’re not wearing clipless shoes that discourage walking).
The other part of me sees how it could encourage cycling. And it does have an “oh, that’s cool” factor.
I’m imagining that on the popular steep streets in San Francisco. But then all the tourists would complain about their bikes getting stolen as they tour around the lift loop (San Francisco has a bit of a bike theft problem).
