This is my first letter as a unicyclist. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have
much to do with unicycling. Why isn’t there a rec.unicycling or
alt.unicycling and what would it take to make one? Just curious.

Well, I’ve been meaning to bring up the topic, so I guess now I will. The list
grew out of a failed vote on rec.unicycling several years ago. Terry Jones then
took the list of yes voters and started the list. I don’t have the exact vote
count anymore, but I was surprised about how many no votes there were. My theory
is that that since it came on the heels of the rec.bicycles, people felt that
the cycling group issue had been settled and didn’t want to add more. I will
gladly accept alternate theories though.
Making alt.unicycling is not too hard. You make a posting of intent and then
pretty much just start it up. I am not inclined to do this, though, because you
don’t get into as many machines when you are in the alt hierarchy, and it is
harder to then become a rec group later.
Rec.unicycling would be a better idea, because it would get more exposure. The
problem is the approval process. To get a rec group, we would have to put it up
for a vote on usenet. We need 100 more yeas than nays, and 2/3 of the votes
must be yeas.
I now throw the issue out for discussion on the mailing list. Tell me (or the
list), how you would vote for a group. Assume there would be a gateway between a
rec group and the existing newsgroup, so you can still get the information if
you don’t have news access. Discussion is welcome, but I also want a count
estimate, so if you have an opinion you can just post “I would vote [yes|no] for
rec.unicycling”.
BTW, we currently have 109 people on the mailing list. We have been around that
number for several months now. Some people join, and some quit or get dropped
for bouncing messages. If everyone on the list voted yes, we could stand 9 no
votes from elsewhere.

Hello,
I can not seam to get any responce from the rec.sport.unicycling at all, is it
operational? or am I doing something wrong (quite possible).
Re: News group (fwd)
RE>News group (fwd)
IMHO this listserv is much more convenient than a newsgroup because I
automatically get the mail. On the other hand, one can more easily attract a
larger audience with a newsgroup. I’d probably vote yes for a rec.uni… but I’d
probably be more interested in following the listserv…

I would vote yes.
I know of at least two others not on this list who would vote yes.

re:News group (fwd)
Hi Beirne,
To start: I would vote yes. To answer your question on how to go about starting
your group: there is a comprehensive faq. on the subject, which is regularly
posted in news.answers I strongly suggest you read and follow the guidelines in
that faq. It may well improve the chances of acceptance by others. And of course
nothing should stop us from posting to rec.bicycles, even if it were just to
scare them :*) Recumbents do not get the best welcome, but the flames seem to
have died a bit now.

I would vote yes for rec.unicycling, although I might not consider it an
excellent idea…

How about floating the idea on rec.juggling as well. They still get unicycling
related threads despite this mailing list and they would be a relevant group to
consult/ try to get on our side. Oh yeah, this assumes that like me you think a
newsgroup would be a good idea. If we are to get as far as a vote we will need
to clearly state our reasons for wanting a newsgroup. Obviously, propogation is
one such issue but what else can we come up with? I think we are getting enough
discussion now to justify a newsgroup. I hope others agree.

Re: News group (fwd)
Sure! I’d vote for the newsgroup. It blows my mind that such a newsgroup would
fail when I look at all the weird and empty newsgroups there are on the net
right now.
alt.alien.vampire.flonk.flonk.flonk ???? alt.amazon-women.admirers ???
alt.baldspot ??? alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.bestiality ???
a.t.fan.addams.family ???
The one I really like is “alt.brother-jed”.
Did all of these require 100 extra votes and a 2/3 vote? Are there any rules
regarding campaigning?

Re: News group (fwd)
I would vote yes for rec.unicycling.
Why?
1 I greatly value and enjoy the information, ideas, and discussion of
this excellent sport.
2 I would like to encourage others in their pursuit of the many positive
aspects of unicycling, not least of which is the camaraderie with others
of like mind.
3 I trust the participants and the power of netiquette to manage the
noise to a tolerable level.
4 If it doesn't work, we can always continue with the current modus
operandus.
Just my two cents.

Mark Lindgren -unicycling for four months strong now.
Re: News group (rec.unicycling)
If rec.unicycling is established it will probably be an unmoderated group, thus
there may be some noise in it. It would be a forum for promoting unicycling to
the public (at least the faction that read USENET groups).
The unicycling mailing list would remain for the hardcore unicyclists and others
who prefer to see unicycling articles in their inbox. The mailing list would
have a gateway to and from rec.unicycling. The list probably would have a
“moderator” who would filter noise out of the flow of articles from
rec.unicycling to the unicycling list. He would not look at articles from the
list to rec.unicycling nor would he moderate the list itself.
The following diagram should clarify this plan:
/--------------\ /---------\ /------------\
| rec.unicycling | ----> | moderator | ----> | mailing list |
\--------------/ \---------/ \------------/
^ ^ | ^
| | | |
| \----------------------------------/ |
v v
/-----------\ /-----------\
| unicyclists | | unicyclists |
-----------/ -----------/
