Hello all,
I am 62 yrs old and have been trying to ride for a month and a half. Today i finally rode away. i cant turn around yet at least(not on purpose) I would like to learn how to mount without the use of a wall. If anyone could tell me how to do it, I would be gratefull. Thanks

well i learnt by putting the seat in my crutch, holding it with my non-dominant hand, having the pedals at 3 and 6 o’clock. Then i put my non-dominant foot on the pedal closest to me. Rather then putting pressure on the back pedals and having it roll back underneat me, i rather jump up onto the unicycle. put a little pressure on the back pedal just to keep the wheel from rolling forward and then launch up onto the unicycle and put your dominant foot on the front pedal and then continue the forward momentum of your body until your leaning forward a bit, then ride off

The way I learnt was like this:

If you’re right footed- roll the wheel until the right pedal is at its lowest point, then put your right foot on the pedal. Swing your left foot over and onto the pedal and slam it backward as you pull your weight forwards, then ride away. Thats the best explanation I can give really - good luck!

Both of the above posters are right…one additional thing, freemounting is the first (IMO) major obstacle to overcome in learning, just don’t give up at this stage, because you’re almost there!

Welcome to the world of unicycling, it’s always cool to see the older portion of the community giving it a try!

Welcome to the fora.

There is loads of info about on freemounting. I’m rubbish myself so I wont give you any instructions. There’s lots of info about on freemounting. (Although I hate to say it) you could do a search. And if you go to http://www.unicycletips.com/
you can find more info and probably a video.

Good luck.

Being able to unicycle is one of the most wonderful things in the world - flying without wings. The important thing is to keep practicing. Nothing comes easy (especially if you’re not a teenager).

I’ve been unicycling for about a year and a half now and I am totally obsessed.

Just practice the above techniques over and over again until you get it, it won’t be long.

you pretty much gotta do wat is said above but you have to remember that people have different prefrences, it depends on you to weather you start with your left or right foot and which hand you prefer to use on your handle

3 and 6? What kind of unicycle do you have?? I think you meant “3 and 9 o’clock”, that’s how most people mount.

ah that would make more sense, but by all means try 3 and 6 o’clock, it would be rather interesting

That would be cool! Not quite a kangaroo, but not quite normal; a kormal or a nangaroo! Could you do that with a splined hub? Oh, wait, you could do that with a cotterless hub too, right?

Welcome kenpen! I completely agree with Cathy here - the flying, the practice and the hard work!

My freemounting advice is pretty much the same as milk, where you go backwards quarter of a pedal with your weak foot. This allows your dominant foot to make the push forwards.
The only downside to learning it this way I have found is that it doesn’t lend to freemounting in other ways. Ideally you want to just go forward from the get-go.

as a beginner myself, I agree with dudewithasock on the fact that learning to freemount is the single most helpful thing in learning to uni, and once you know how, you can see yourself get better. just keep goin at it.
