Newbie

I found this site from a bicycling forum. I could barely ride a unicycle 25 years ago. I’m now 53, and thinking of trying it again. Is there any hope at this age? Also, I thought you might enjoy this painting from my artist wife.

That is a great painting! =p

Also, welcome to the forums!!

There is hope for you, plenty of it. There are many riders of your age and older that still ride their unis, or have picked it up again.

Do you still have your old uni form so long ago? Or do you need to buy a new one?

Either way, Buying a Torker LX 20 inch, or a 24 inch for more speed wouldnt be a bad idea. Maybe even getting one of their Commuting unis, with 26 or 28inch wheels could be an upgrade for you if you still have your old uni to relearn on.

I gotta go to bed, more people will chime in, but the forums are kinda quit around this time.

hey welcome.

that picture is great!

there are many people your age, you should definately try again.

52?

thats still young !

53 is even younger!

Love the painting! There isn’t nearly enough unicycle art out there. Is it for sale? How about a larger scan?

Anyway, you’re not too old to unicycle. At whatever age you are, for most people, your brain & body will work together to make you sufficiently cautious to not kill yourself. You can’t land as hard, or as much, as you would when you were a kid, but that’s not a big part of unicycling. Use a fence, wall or rail to get started. Wear hand and knee protection. And have fun!

O, welcome, I didn’t see this till just now, but anyways, welcome!
You should definitly learn, there are ton’s of people older than you that uni!

Welcome to the forum Jim.
I may be wrong, but I think Patmoore is our oldest at the moment.
I think he’s around the sixty mark, but from the videos he’s posted I refuse to believe this. I think he’s a twenty year old with a mask on.
Good luck with (re)learning!

OOO! coasting on the saddle!! Welcome to the forums!!!

Thanks for the advice. No I don’t have a unicycle right now. Back when I rode one, I borrowed it from a friend. I had it for a few weeks. I was only able to ride about 10-20 feet, wobbling the whole way.

I may look for one on E-Bay or something. I have kids in college, so we’re scrimping and saving. I’m 5’11". Is the 20" the right choice? Also, what’s the easiest unicycle to (re)learn to ride. Don’t think I’ll be commuting on one any time soon.

Hand and knee protection - good advice! In my usual daredevil form, I probably would have neglected these.

My wife has some prints of this and other paintings. They’re fairly reasonable at about $10. The sizes are posted. The bottom of the painting was cut off by our scanner, so this one is probably about 8-1/2 x 12. It’s in the Art Gallery section of our website (see signature).

OK, then seeing how commuting isnt in your interests yet, getting a nice Torker LX will be a great starter uni. They come in a 20 or a 24 inch version, and can be bought for about 90 dollars on Ebay.

There isnt too much difference learning on a 20 or 24, but I would prefer the 20 inch.

Don’t worry about your size, I am just a wee bit taller than you, and I ride with a 20 inch, and fit perfectly. If the seat is too tall, cut down the seat post an inch or two and see if it fits then. If not, cut a little bit more.

if you just plan to ride around, get a 24". if you plan to do tricks and stuff, get a 20". either size is fine for learning to ride but the 24" will be a lot more fun over any kind of distance, even just around the block. torker lx is probably a good choice. stay away from torker cx and savage unicycles.

Hi Jim! welcome to the fora;) …
Your username is funny as it is the contraction of a french expression “gagne-pain” (wich means a job, something that allows you to litteraly “earn bread”) Is it a fancy username or is it your family name? (you can PM me if you want to keep privacy;) )
…and you’re definately not too old to ride:D

[edit]

Big deal!! I do it every morning before breakfast, though I never tried while peting a cat:D  [/edit]

It is my family name. Nobody ever explained the “job” part. I new that it meant “Bread Winner”.

That’s a great painting!

Welcome to the forums and good luck with reviving your unicycling.

You are too old to be unicycling. Don’t try it. You’ll get hurt and look like an idiot.

At 5’ 11", I would suggest (re)learning on a 24". It will be more useful to you after you (re)learn because it is quite a bit faster than a 20".

Do you think he should make a poll and see how many people think he should start unicycling again?

Yes. One with animated emoticons.

Are moderators supposed to threadjack?
