not sure what all that means, like ive never heard of anything other than a 9 foot unicyle that clowns use, im just tryin to learn a bt before i get involved
edit just realized this might be in the wrong forum, admin, feel free to move it sorry
Yes, you should be in the RSU forum with a thread title clearer that just “Newbie.” If you’re in Fredericton, New Brunswick, you may want to check out Darren Bedford’s site, Bedford Unicycles. He’s in Toronto and is generally easier to communicate with by e-mail or phone. He makes outstanding products at fair prices and is in Canada.
The huge US source is Unicycle.com owned and operated by John and Amy Drummond. They have entry level unicycles that will compete in price for used unicycles that you might find on e-Bay or elsewhere. Your local bikeshops may carry the Torker line and would be a good resource to try.
Nah, this forum works. For the future, though, most unicycling questions are usually put in Rec.Sport.Unicycling.
As for looking for a place to buy a unicycle, try www.unicycle.com. A beginners unicycle that will last a long time will usually run for about $100 plus shipping, depending on the model. Habbywal was refering to the Torker LX unicycle, shown here.
Before you rush into buying a unicycle, though, you want to figure out the type of riding you want to do. I suggest browsing around some of the threads in rec.sport.unicycling to get a grasp of what is possible in this sport.
Try The Unicycle Roster for Canada. It probably should be subcategorized by province but you get what you get. There are a few riders listed there from New Brunswick. Riding with others is more fun. Learning with or from others is usually faster.
My move into the unicycling world is relatively similar to yours; I saw a unicyclist and was immediately inspired to purchase one. Sadly, for me, I hadn’t heard of this great forum before my first purchase. I bought a 24" Torker CX and spent a few weeks ‘getting the hang of it’, but soon realized that an upgrade was in order. I bought a 20" Torker LX (2005 model, if it matters) and it has last about a year. It isn’t broken or anything (Torker is a very reputable brand), but these days I prefer to ride around on my modified 28" Sun.
For a tall begginner, I reccommend a 24" Torker LX. I am 6’5" ~180lbs and I ride either of the aforementioned, so you should be fine on anything.
But, seriously, unicycling is one of the most fun things that you can do. It is a lot of fun watching your skills improve (see unicycle skill levels for more info) and, if possible, even more fun to watch people’s faces in disbelief as you climb a lightpost, mount a 6’ giraffe, and proceed to ride circles around the onlookers.
I really hope you decide to purchase a unicycle, and I’m sure you won’ regret it.
