Can you explain why?

Also, what is the difference between cotter and cotterless?

Newtouni

If you are thinking about muni you will need a FAT TIRE. The regular bicycle tires that come on a street uni sink immediatly into damp earth. Grippy tread is important as well. Think, “How much fun can I have for the money?” carjug

Cottered

  • only found on older unis
  • spindle end is round
  • hole in crank is round
  • crank held on spindle with a (cotter) pin
(pin needs to be greased then pounded in with a hammer)

Cotterless

  • not cottered, not splined
  • spindle end is a square taper
  • hole in crank is square
  • crank held on spindle with a nut (or some more recent models with a bolt)
(spindle taper needs to be greased then nut torqued to 35-40ft-lbs with a torque wrench. Note: this is “very tight”, tighter than can easily be done with a 3/8" socket wrench)
