Newbie Question - which unicycle

Hi,

I’m planning on getting a unicycle soon, but I dont really know the 1st
thing about them. I scanned deja for some answers, but didn’t get much.
I’d love some advice on what to do.

  1. Im based in Cambridge UK, where should I shop ( I have only tried
    unicycle.uk.com ) ?

  2. I’m 6’1" and I’m wanting a unicycle to learn on with a view to
ultimately being able to cycle to my department on it ( a mile or so
away). If it has to come down to a compromise between learnability and
performance, then Im willing to take a little longer learning if it
means I will have a better unicycle in the long run. So - Which
    unicycle should I get ?

all advice greatly appreciated,

cheers

As far as shops go, unicycle source http://www.unicycle.uk.com/ is the
easiest place to get a decent uni.

If you want to ride outside you’ll probably want a 24in wheel. They’re
fine for learning on and they have enough range for lots of nice rides
that are possible in Cambridge. Jesus Green / Midsummer Common and down by
the river are pretty smooth and nice for uni.

If you’re not sure if you’ll keep with it and want the cheapest one, then
get the Dodger. However I’d be slightly worried about the Dodger unicycle,
as that has “lollipop” bearing holders which I found a bit too easy to
break, so probably a Rogue or a Nimbus one would be best. If you’re sure
you’ll want to keep going with it and you’re likely to want to go offroad
then a 26in Pashley Muni would be a possible starter, although it might be
a bit harder to mount with the bigger wheel and the metal pedals would
hurt you a lot when you were learning.

It might be worth going along to the juggling club
http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/cuja/ to have a go on a unicycle for a bit
with people to help you.
