hey all… im farely new to riding my uni, i picked it up (whatver kind it
is…) at this local bike shop about 2 weks ago… after a few nights a week
practice, i find myself to be pretty good at
it… i could seemingly go forever…but, my legs start to ache real bad
(muscles…?) and i have to stop…wait, then start again.
is this something everyone experiances at first because they’re not use to it?
or do i just need to emphasize more weight on the seat?
also, any pointers for geting on the bloody thing WITHOUT leaning on my
neighbor’s car?

make sure the seat post is high enough for you. www.unicycling.org will answer
all the questions you have better than i could. it will even give you tips on
free mounting, so your neighbors car will go with out your finger prints on it
anymore. ;D
Having your weight on the seat definitely helps, but also you are developing
muscles that you don’t normally use. Give it time… Muscle development &
better balance = less effort to stay up- which means more enjoyment. Make sure
you seat is at a proper height as well (leg almost fully extended when peddle
at lowest position)

I had that same problem when I first started out too. I tjust took a few weeks
of solid practice to stregthen my upper legs, and get some muscle endurance. I
bet the same thing will happen to you.

You seemed to have picked it up faster than I did.

You need to learn to sit on the seat. Everyone has that problem. The physical
exertion of pedalling isn’t much compared to riding a bicycle at a good speed,
unicycles are usually geared pretty low.

Put your right pedal near the ground and step on it, with the seat in your
crotch. Orient the left pedal more-or-less in line with the crank. Take a smal
hop to step onto the left pedal. My big problem in learning to mount was trying
too hard, and then I’d overshoot the left pedal.

Yeah, same thing here. I learned to ride last year and was fine for short jaunts
up and down the block a time or two, but longer rides gave me a real pump/burn
in my legs. It went away as the muscles used for unicycling developed more. I
wouldn’t worry about it, just keep working and rest when you need to.
