new wireless keyboard has me going in circles...

I am running XP on my PC and currently have an old A4Tech wireless keyboard and optical mouse. Today I bought a new Microsoft wireless keyboard and optical mouse. However I can not get it to run on my computer. I think the keyboard may be functioning but the mouse, though the red light is on, will not respond on the computer.

I have downloaded Intellipoint 5.3 and Intellitype pro 5.3 from the Microsoft site but still no response from this new set up.

I am thinking of deleting the drivers/set up for the original A4Tech keyboard and mouse but if the Microsoft set up still doesn’t function after that I will be without any means of communicating with the computer.

Any suggestions?

thanks

You could get a Mac…

ahhh, yes…good idea indeed…for the long term…

in the meantime…any other ideas?

Switch to Linux?

Seriously, though, you don’t have any wired keyboards you could use as you switch the wireless drivers? You can always get a really cheap wired keyboard/mouse from a used store or a garage sale. BTW, what’s wrong with your current wireless set-up that you feel you have to upgrade?

Go to the thrift store and get an old IBM PS/2 keyboard, then get yourself a standard microsoft USB optical mouse for $20 at hastings.

The current mouse’s doorway to the batteries has snapped so that it won’t shut on its own. The mouse won’t run with the batteries case uncovered and so the door has to get taped shut each time the batteries are changed. The tape is gobbing up all over and its getting pretty gross as we keep replacing it.

I thought that if I only bought a new optical mouse I might run into connection problems. Ironic isn’t it? So I thought by getting both a new mouse and keyboard and a better brand to boot, I would have a painless upgrade. Little did I know… :astonished:

Why upgrade? Why not go back to the standard wired keyboard and mouse?

Yeah I’m seriously considering that now.

I had preferred the wireless mouse as I am a left handed user and my partner who shares the computer is a right hander so it was handy to switch the mouse back and forth without messing with wires. Kind of perferred how ‘tidy’ the wireless set up seemed overall.

But nevermind that, doesn’t help to be tidy if the thing won’t even work!!!

weird, so am i. but i find right handing the mouse better so i can type with the left…i have often wondered why (in the right handed world) that it was originaly stationed on the right to begin with…

Erin, check your PMs. Tom

I use kayboards and mise with wires. So much better, I will naer have to change batteries and stuff.

hey now, spread the love and keep no sequins.

I just got home from work where I tried the new keyboard and mouse. It worked so well I almost just left it there!

And now I have a back up plug in keyboard and mouse so I shall forge on trying to get this set up to work on my computer at home.

One thing I noticed yesterday was that at start up some sort of BIOS screen (black background with code types of text) comes on instead of the usual start up. Hitting the space bar on the keyboard makes it disappear but I’m sure this is some sort of clue that I can’t recognize and has to do with this problem…any ideas?

Did you plug the new hardware into your PC when it was turned off, or when it was already on? If off, try it while on…with XP that should prompt it to try to recognize the new hardware.

Another option would be to try posting the question in one of the MSFT support newsgroups. Think of it like this forum, but with many folks with the same kind of PC expertise that john_childs and others here have with uni equipment. There’s a pretty good chance this has been asked and answered before, or at least that someone there has experience with the problem.

The address is here: http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx

On the left side you can pick your language, then Original List, Hardware, Hardware Products.

Thanks for the suggestions Tom! I will try the ‘hot’ plug in.

And yes, I will go to the geek speak forum and see what help I can get there.

I know I could just give up and get a corded keyboard and mouse but I figure that really this thing should be able to work on my computer and with a bit of time and a few more ideas I might be able to work it out.

Again, thanks.
