I finally got my first unicycle today. It is a Torker LX 24". I originally bought it for $107.00 including sales tax, but when I picked it up today they siad that when it was shipped they rear scuff guard on the seat got scratched so they took and additional $12.00 off:) .
How do I learn to ride it? my crotch is soar and I can barely stay on longer than 5ft:( I can’t get on it very easily either:(
When mounting, be by a fence, or a pole, and keep the pedal down, so if your mounting with the right foot first, have the right pedal down. Step onto it, then bring the left foot up. Get stable and move forward so you in a comfy horizontal pedal position.
In this position, adjust yourself, move your stuff so your not sitting on anything. Keep your wait on the seat, this is very important to do.
Now, that you have your genitals out of the way, and your balanced, and everything is good, lean forward a little bit, and start pedaling. Your gonna be falling a lot, just keep trying, so your go 10 feet, then 20, down the block, start learning how to turn, going up and down your block, start learning to do tighter turns, longer distance, then your gonna be riding your uni like its second nature and you will forget your pedaling and everything will work.
About the crotch soreness, it will go away, a lot of people will say bike shorts and stuff like that, but I would only do that on long distance rides. I wear jeans and boxers, I had soreness for the first month of riding, and now its gone, I ride for hours a day, and never get sore anymore. Just think of it as an initiation for unicycling. lol
wow, your doing great. just keep practising. If your crotch is sore, there are two options I know of. Buy a new seat like the nimbus gel and seatpost, or buy bike shorts. I also think some people make this cream stuff you canput on before you ride. try the bike shorts though.
edit: do pretty much everything jerrik said. It’s good advise.
the seat post it came with is a 400mm I think and it was way to tall for me. I am about 5’8" and so I cut off 3 inches. How do I know what is the right height?
Yep, what i have found that works on most people for a good height. Take the uni right up in front of you, and have the seat right at your groin area, that’s usually a good place for it.
Some will have it lower, other will like it higher, specially for freestyle tricks, but starting at the groin area is a good area to try.
I’ve taught a few people to ride. And What tell em is don’t try and balence it. Cause if YOU try and balence the uni you’ll probally fall over. I think that most people at the begining of learning to ride a unicycle don’t have good enough reflexes. Sit ontop of the wheel too.
