I decided that my new year’s resolution was to learn to ride a unicycle, so
on 2 Jan I went out and bought one. I am trying to ride it the best I can
but could do with any (and I mean any) tips for an absolute beginner. Are
there any web sites, videos etc that might help me along.
I want to enjoy it but I am finding it frustrating at the moment and don’t
want to lose interest in what looks like a great hobby.
as I’ve began to learn how to ride unicycle, I’ve found out that it is very good in the learning process, to search a point to which you drive from the starting place. Only drive one or three metres in any direction is not that good.
Good for learning are books with the several technique’s and unicycling videos.
I am just learning too. I got my first unicycle for Christmas and I am at the same stage as you. I get a lot of inspiration just from reading this news group. Also check out the following links:

Simon - there are many such sites. Just type uncycling into your search
engine of choice and you’ll be inundated. A brief hunt around and
you’ll
soon find a lot of good advice for beginners and beyond. You will
inevitably find some sites seem to give contradictory ideas than others,
but
somewhere out there is the method that will work for you.
I started riding just over a year ago and all my “teaching” came from
the
web. Believe me, it’s a godsend. Best of luck, and have fun!

Simon: practice, practice, practice, and ignore the pain (if any) Once you get going, don’t stop. Keep your head up. Do every thing you can to stay on the thing and don’t be afraid to fall. MOST IMPORTANTLY, Have Fun!

Simon,
Others have given you tips on where to find videos, so I wont. I just
wanted to say that I am learning too, and I love it. Just stick with
it. If you know somebody else that rides, or if you can get somebody
else interested in learning, it may help your eagerness. I know I
enjoy riding more since I have a friend (Chris/Rhysling) who rides.
But just keep with it, you’ll be glad you did. You WILL have some days
that are just not good days, but you’ll always have days that are
great.
I spent all of Saturday coming back from a 2 week hiatus after being
sick, and I literally could not ride the uni more than 3 feet, except
twice. It was like some kind of curse. However, the very next day
(today), I put a little more air in my tire, and I had a great day! I
got in at least 30 rides of over 70 feet, and I made a ton of progress
on steering and riding on grass and powering through bumps on the
concrete. It was my best day ever. I just wish there wasnt a hill 70
feet out on my course, I could probably go more.
OK I’m rambling …
My point is just encouragement; I am still learning and let me just
say that if you stick with it, you WILL master it. If you have a bad
day, persist, because you WILL have many good days.
