I"m new to Unicycling. Just got a Torker LX 24". I’ve been riding for a few weeks now and feeling great about the whole thing. There’s so much to learn. I can mount and ride until my legs get tired and I’m trying some hopping in place and some Idling with no real luck.
I really have nothing special to say, just wanted to introduce myself:D
I’m truly amazed at what can be done on a Uni, you guys blow me away.
Does anybody on here live in Southern California? I’ve met some of my best friends through a forum similar to this based around motorcycles. I’m hoping to find some friends to Uni with too.
1) That is the perfect unicycle (in my opinion) to learn on. I can ride for a long time myself, but everytime i get off my 29er i feel weird. Like i want to get back on and keep riding. 2) Well, let me be the first to welcome you to the forums as well. My name is Harry a.k.a Hazmat. 3) I’m sure sooner or later, you will match us. Just have perseverance and patience and you will go far.
Thanks for the Welcome Harry. I’ve been browsing the site and came upon the new trick thread. HOly cow! I felt like I accomplished a huge feat by going a curb twice yesterday without crashing
Don’t try to put it in perspective by comparing it to something someone else has done. These accomplishments are big when they happen regardless of the height or danger involved. I remember my first curb. I was too scared for a long time to even try it. Then… after “surviving” you look to another challenge. There’s always another challenge.
I am glad everything is working out so well for you
Like you I suck compared to the amazing riders here. I will give you some beginner tips.
Stupid dorky looking spandex type padded bike shorts. On a tip last year I bought a set for 30 $, and I wear them inside out. That way the seamless side is on the inside. I am sure the 100 $ shorts with the better seams are even better, but I haven’t tried them.
I have a Torker ax 29, and I went out for a 2 hour ride this afternoon using the stock (same as lx ) seat. I paused before I left to decide if I would loosen the seat posts and swap out the KH seat- post from my muni , but I was to lazy. The lx seat isn’t as good as KH, but with padded bike shorts it is just fine for a couple hours. Padded tight shorts reduce friction and except for the fashion hit are highly recommended.
2 Get Odessey pc pedals, install them with grease real tight. Also tighten your cranks.
You might want to not worry about idling and riding backwards if you think you might buy a trials uni soon. Have fun on your 24 riding all around, and when you get a 19 you can learn to idle watching movies, and going backwards is easier to on the small wheel.
YES! Another SoCalifornian! I’m in Anaheim, but you might want to talk to Terry aka Unigeezer aka Muniaddict. I think he’s really close to you! I’m looking forward to meeting you at one of the local rides that take place around here.
Right on Joe! I"ve talked with Terry via Pm already, seems like a great guy. I’m hoping to tag along with him sometime soon. Looking forward to riding and learning from you too.
Thanks for the tips, feelthelight. I have a set of bike shorts I use for motorcycle riding. I’m not sure why I didn’t think of using them. I"m going to look into some new pedals too. The stock ones are WAY slippery. Need to get some leg armour too.
I put together a little video of my accompishments last night. This video was all taken yesterday, 20 days from when I got my first Uni. I feel like I"m doing pretty good, and my confidence is high. If you guys have time, check it out and give me some critique. It’s okay if you laugh at me too, I know I was laughing my ass off making the video. I’ts hard to look hip, slick and cool when your learning how to Uni.
As far as tips, you might try to make a habit out of catching the front seat when you UPD. Parts, especially pedals, last longer if you smash them on the side less often.
Funny I was thinking the same thing while I was watching the video. It looks like I just step off although that is not my intention at all. I’m going to work on that thanks.
I tried some different ways of mounting today after watching some unigeezer videos. It just blows me away that I can jump right on the way I do it (no idea what it’s called) almost every time. Then when I try another way it seems so ackward.
