new Muni options

Hello! I’ve been reading this newsgroup for a while and thought I
would make my presence known and ask a question. Background
info- I learned to ride on a friends 20", later bought a noname,
lollypop 24" (before I learned so much from you guys), now I also
have a 20"Onza trials, 24" miyata (old, with metal based front and
back same width seat), and a Yuni 26" frame and suzue hub. I am
thinking of two options, buy a 24x3 Gazz for the Yuni frame and use
the miyata for my short daily commute, or, Buy a 26" knobby tire for
the Yuni frame, a 24" knobby for the Miyata and use them both for
Muni (limiting the Miyata to 2’ drops) and commuting on the 24"
noname. For those who regularly ride a 24" and 26" Muni, what is
your opinion? Also, would the Miyata hold up to frequent hopping
and small drops? If not, I definetly want to go with the 24x3 Gazz.
Thanks for all your help. I have learned a lot here and now I hope to
join in the fun on the newsgroup as well as offer my own bad advice!
------- End of forwarded message -------

I ride a 24x3" and am very happy with it. I don’t have a 26"-er so can’t offer comparisons from personal experience.

There’s loads of posts on this subject, for example: -

Remember that a 24" with a 3" tyre is effectively the same diameter as a 26"-er.

Also, quality of both being equal, a 24" rim will be considerably stronger than a 26"-er

Unless it’s an unusual Miyata frame, there’s no way it will fit a tire
wide enough to compare with a real MUni tire. Either the Miyata or
the noname will work for commuting, until the noname’s frame breaks,
so I’d probably ride the noname until it gives up the ghost, then
switch to the Miyata. Definitely, if you’re going to go off-road,
you’ll be much happier with the Yuni 24x3 or 26x3; buy it now, or
you’ll wind up having to buy it later when you ride with other guys on
3" tires and realize how much easier they have it.

Yuni-> MUni
Miyata->skills and (very short) commuting
Noname->bang around on, loan to learners
Coker, Coker, Coker-> real commuting

A Coker is on my wanted list. However, my wife and daughter requested
that some money be spent on them occasionally. How selfish!

thanks to everyone who answered. I think the 24x3 Gazz will fit my
needs. Of course I’ll put a 26" MUni on my wanted list;)
Anyone know any MUni/trials riders in Japan? We just moved to Karuizawa
in January.
