Been lurking for awhile, and decided to register. This site is really valuable; thank you all for the tips, info, and general good humor.
I asked my mother for a unicycle when I was 8 years old. She said NO. Every birthday and every Christmas, I kept asking, and she not only said NO but expressly forbid my possession of a unicycle. So right before I went off to college (out of state!) I bought one, took it apart, and sent it to myself. It was a rather poor specimen of 20" uni, but what did I know? I taught myself to ride, and had fun cruising around campus. For the last 16 years I’ve occasionally taken it around the block, but nothing serious.
Now I am Old. I have been wanting to do more unicycling, and figured I’d better start now before I entirely lose what little skill I had. I discovered that I can get to work via two buses and a unicycle in reasonably good time. The ride is only about 1.2 miles, so I figure that’s a good starting distance. I’ve done it a couple of times and it has been great fun except from the predictable comments from b*cyclists.
Skills: virtually none. I can reliably mount unassisted, go forward until certain parts of me get sore or I encounter a curb, and get off without it looking like too much of an accident. After I get a little more practice under my belt, I want to learn to hop and idle. (I know. This is pretty pathetic.)
So anyway, thanks for letting me hang around here.
The “no unicycles” policy was not that she thought I’d kill myself, but that she thought a) I’d never be able to ride it, and b) I’d lose interest even if I did. As for a), she had good reason to say this, as I was the most clumsy kid in the history of the world. I mean, really clumsy. Walking and chewing gum at the same time? Ha. I could barely walk and breathe at the same time. (Fortunately, the situation has improved somewhat.)
And yes, she knows about the unicycle. When she came out to visit me at college, I made my appearance by riding up to her. She took it well.
I just wish the new ride would get here. I fear it’s stuck on the other side of Snoqualmie Pass.
welcome to the forums. I’ve been here a few months and nobody bites too hard no it’s lots of possitive encouragement and I really enjoy spending some of my time on here. As for the getting old I do not think you have to worry about it because it happens to everyone. One day if I’m lucky I will get wiser. ha. Welcome to the forums. Just ask if you have any questions there are plenty of people that will give their advise and a few of them are sometimes even helpful.
