“AOL is collecting information on what Netscape 6 users are searching for on
sites like google.com. IP address, the date Netscape was installed and a
unique ID number are other bits of information AOL is also collecting”

If you read the article it simplay states that using the search feature
of your netscape browser will send you to the netscape site and then
forward you to google, or whatever search engine you set up.

Here’s the paragraph that mentions it:
“Anytime a Navigator user performs a search by typing terms into the
browser’s URL bar and pressing the adjacent Search button, or by using
the Search tab on the browser’s My Sidebar feature, the user data is
sent to a server at info.netscape.com using a uniform resource locator
(URL) forwarding system.”

I suppose so.

Re: Netscape 6 is spyware?

Well, no. This is like my browser, without my knowing it, using a tinyurl
redirect to get to a search engine when I thought it was going straight to
the search engine – that is, the only concievable reason for adding the
redirect would be so that Gilby could record my traffic.

Though TinyURL.com (even when used in its intended honorable and
non-deceptive manner) does have the potential to develop valuable data on
web traffic now that I think of it. There may be more money in that than
there would be in having ads.

So, the first question is, how does this harm anyone or violate anyones
privacy? And the second, how could I use this data, assuming that I had
enough data to do something with?

You get the technology, I’ll figure out a way to make money with it for you.
