I am looking for some shorts that are just the outer-shell. I have the under protection, chamois, and everything. I just need like an outer durable fabric to go over them. I know some mountain bike shorts have removable inner lining, but I was hoping to avoid some cost by just getting the outer portion.
I don’t really care about colors, but I would prefer a longer pair of shorts, to cover some of my above-knee area. I also don’t care about pockets at all, can have none as far as I am concerned.
Golf or hiking shorts from K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc., under $15. They don’t look like thrasher gear, which might or might not suit you, but they’ve held up well for me (years of biking and skating before I started unicycling) and the ones with microfiber fabric are great in hot weather. The pockets are nice sometimes too.
Most durable are DH shorts. You can try get TLD DH on eBay. They also have side impact protection removable inserts.
I riding in two shorts - for summer and for fall/spring.
Summer ones are usual cotton thin shorts and second one Sombrio bike shorts.
Both of them are too gentle for DH. TLD or Alpinestar - really heavy duty equipment.
They broke into the car, stole the bag and Scalisi’s cell phone. The shorts were the only thing of value in my bag (other than the bag itself, which was pretty cool).
I wear shorts as an outer layer over bike shorts - I have a pair of Kühl’s that I got as a gift, and a pair of redsand board shorts that I got in a thrift shop; before that I was wearing some other thrift shop find.
Basically anything that’s a tough microfiber, so it stands up to chafing and the occasional crash and doesn’t get soaking wet like cotton.
I also use compression shorts underneath. For the outer shorts, I just check the 75% clearance rack at Target whenever I’m in there. You can often score good synthetic material shorts there for just a couple bucks.
