NAUCC 2004 to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah July 12 - July 18, 2004

The next North American Unicycling Championships and Convention (NAUCC) will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah July 12 through July 18, 2004.

Carol Bricker has volunteered to serve as chairperson of the NAUCC 2004 organizing committee. Carol is a very accomplished rider and attended many early NUMs and UNICONs as a member of Redford Township Unicycle Club (RTUC). She won several world and North American championship titles.

Preliminary plans call for NAUCC 2004 to be held Monday, July 12 (registration, possible USA meeting) through Sunday, July 18. Artistic events would be held Tuesday, July 13 and Wednesday, July 14. Racing (track) events would be held Thursday, July 15 and Friday, July 16. MUni events, a 10K, etc. would be held Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18. Unofficial, “fun rides,” will be offered Monday, July 19 for people wishing to leave for UNICON XII directly from Salt Lake City. UNICON XII will be held July 23 through August 1 in Tokyo, Japan.

Lodging in the Salt Lake City area is plentiful and reasonable. We will pass on some details of lodging and venues soon.

There is no unicycle club in the Salt Lake City area to organize and run NAUCC 2004. Carol Bricker has been assembling an organizing committee from the USA, Inc. membership at large. Members so far include:

  • Racing: RTUC members have volunteered to organize and run the track events

  • Artistic: Connie Cotter, Twin Cities Unicycl Club (TCUC)

  • MUni: A Salt Lake City area MUni rider (I believe he is the gentleman who organizes the annual Moab MUni event - I’ll get his name to you soon)

  • Registration: Tom Daniels, Panther Pride Demo Team (PPDT - USA, Inc. President)

  • Finances - Karen Rabideau, PPTD (USA, Inc. Treasurer)

  • Workshops: Carol McLean, TCUC

If you would like to volunteer to help the USA, Inc. organize and run NAUCC 2004, please contact me directly via e-mail.

Watch for more details as they come available here, on the USA, Inc. Web site and in the Society’s newsletter, On One Wheel.

We’re planning a bunch of workshops this summer!

What are you most interested in?

Who’s volunteering to lead some?

Example: John Childs (?) – uni maintenance

Just let me know: cettermclean at hotmail dot com.

Thanks!

This is such AWESOME news. I can’t think of a single place where I’d rather explore muni trails.

I lived in Salt Lake City 20 years ago, and can only imagine taking unicycles down the runs at Snow Bird or Alta.

Congratulations everybody, and Hoooooray!!!

I waited and waited, then on Thursday I submitted my schedule for the year. I just sent in an amendment so I hope that it can be accommodated. I would really like to go again.

If some of the competition is going to Japan, and can’t make it to Salt Lake I might be able to move from 4th to 3rd. Of course I expect that a lot of people aren’t flying to Japan and most are better than me.

(Drool…)

First Moab, now Nationals. Both in my backyard! There is a semi-organized unicycle club in Utah, but not organized enough to sponsor the thing. They could probably help out, though.
BTW, the guy who does the Moab MUnifest is Rolf Thompson.

Can’t wait to hear more about all of this!

Too bad the International Juggling Association (IJA) Convention in Buffalo
is the same week.

I can’t be in both places at the same time.

Hey,
is there any registration fee or anything? I’m trying to figure out exactly how much this will cost to convince my parents that I can, in fact, pay for it.

James,

The registration fee for NAUCC 2004 has not been set. This fee will be based on costs for things such as facilities, awards, etc. that are still in the process of being determined. Look for more details on registration in January.

Typically, registration fees are in the range of $50 to $90 for competitors. There have been lower, “early,” registration fees in the past for riders able to commit earlier (for example, before April 1) versus riders who show up and register on-site.

Alright, thanks.

I had heard a rumor (from Carol Bricker), which is why I asked before, BUT NOW I KNOW!

Very exciting news!

Especially for those of us who live nearby.

For the record there IS a unicycle club (not USA sanctioned) near Salt Lake City. It is based out of Lindon, UT and was started by Guy Hansen about 2 years ago.

-mg

Oops, that should be “(not NAUCC sanctioned)”. I’ve gotta get with the times.

-mg

Michael,

You had it right the first time.

The Unicycling Society of America, Inc. sanctions the North American Unicycling Championships and Convention (NAUCC). Riders at a NAUCC must be members in good standing of the USA, Inc.

After taking in to account the established dates for UNICON XII, no club (USA, Inc. affiliated or otherwise) was willing to serve as the local organizers of NAUCC 2004. Calls for volunteers at our annual meeting and on this forum went unanswered. Therefore, the USA, Inc. are also serving as the sponsors of NAUCC 2004.

Tom Daniels
President, Unicycling Society of America, Inc.

Thanks for clarifying my misunderstanding.

-mg

Here are some of the workshops, games, and discussions that we could organize for NAUCC 2004. Please feel free to suggest others and to sign up to help.

  1. Sumo
  2. Quidditch
  3. Geared hub–demonstration and specs
  4. Skills demonstrations: mounts, one-foot, wheel walk, hop on wheel, spins
  5. Games, indoors–warm up, group games, relays
  6. Outdoor water games
  7. Teaching people to ride
  8. Open Gym Night: Games, Swap Meet, Basketball training, Hockey training
  9. Riding and juggling
  10. Ultimate Wheel riding
  11. Coasting Wheel riding
  12. Specialty Unicycles
  13. Parade riding
  14. Riding giraffes
  15. Starting a club; maintaining a club

Would any of these be interesting or worthwhile to you? What else should we try to add?

Thanks!

Is there going to be a trials competetion? All of those look good Carol. I would really like to see the geared hub though.

Alex

QUIDDITCH! QUIDDITCH!! QUIDDITCH!!! WHOOOOOOO
I like Quidditch. Also I’m looking forward to the starting a club part, my friends and I are beginning to start one.
[EDIT: I agree with ajp, we should definitely have some trialling. If that’s even a word.]

Perhaps it is still a little early to be asking but:

Have any venues been decided upon?

-mg

At the Rubiks Cube world championship, the hotel had a Cuber Discount. Will any hotels have a unicyclist discount?
