nano no more!

Well I finally got my new nano and for a day it worked fine with itunes. I also run a shuffle and a mini on this program and yesterday when I got the new nano I simply plugged it in, it showed up in intunes and I loaded it up with music and photos. It was really fun to have the new wee device…that is until today.

Today I made the foolish mistake of downloading the latest ipod updater (2006-01-10) and ever after that the nano didn’t show in itunes any more. Still all systems go for the shuffle and mini but no nano to be seen.

I eventually uninstalled itunes and cleaned up the files and did a reinstall to no avail. Still no nano in sight when I plug it in to itunes.

I think it may be the updater but I don’t know for sure now.

Any ideas how I can get the new device back into itunes?

I don’t have a clue. If it’s any consolation, apparantly you’re not alone.

Hope the bump gets you a better reply.

Assuming Apple has a 1-800 tech support line, call them up… After having it a day, it’s got to still be under warranty.

And I was just thinking I wanted one

Yes, this is a frustrating problem. I will try calling Apple to see if they can help.

I regret having run the updater as everything worked fine prior to that. :frowning:

Would the old saying ‘if it aint broke, don’t fix it’ ever be accepted in our modern techological world?

There is a simple fix to this problem. BUY A MAC! macs will accept anything you plug in them so if t doesnt show up in iTunes it will show up on the desktop and you can put music in it that way. I am sorry but microsoft has a seriouse disability and that disability would have to be everything about them.
This problem happened to my buddys microsoft computer and he has to now give me his nano and I put music on it for him.

yikes, sounds like a bad “upgrade” to me. try these two things, reinstall the update, or (this is what I would do) install the old software from the cd that came with the nano. It will erase your nano, and therefore lose anything that is on it, but it should get you back to where you were yesterday!

which one did you get, 1 gb, 2gb, or 4gb?

thanks for the suggestions briguymaine. I have a 2 gb nano which surprisingly has a similar capacity to my 4 gb mini…why is that I wonder?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes and the updater. The updater again seemed to hang when I tried to run it. And of course itunes continues to not recognize the device.

I like your idea of downloading the program from the disk. When I downloaded from the apple site the reinstall also reinstalled all my music which is stored in the “My Music” folder on my harddrive. Do you know if the reinstall from the cd would allow the same preservation of my music ( it would be a big job if I had to load everything back in via my cd drive but could be done if I had to).

Also, I got the nano from someone back east who is a francophone. The manual that came with the nano is only in French. Does anyone know if that means that the software cd will also be in French?! :astonished:

thanks for your thoughts on this.

…yes, way too true!

Gild, that is going to be my motto from now on!

people put stuff like that in there sig lines;)

Ah, but what about all the new features that happen to be included in with the bug fixes?

hes around?
GILBY? I havent seen you in ages.

There it is, the voice of seduction. “I don’t care if it’s perfect, it can be better…”
“Don’t learn that things can be good, assume that they can always improve, that way we can trap you in our rampant consumerism and keep you enslaved untill you die.”

Now I want you all to take the sheet of tinfoil and shape it into a cone…

Have we ever met? You should come to Mondo.

Ah, a tinfoil hat… that should fool my rfid security system.

Well here’s a ipod story with a (rare) happy ending.

No matter how many times I reinstalled the updater it seemed to hang when it went to update nano.

So I uninstalled all apple related programs: ipod, itunes…etc. Cleaned up the computer, even turned off a lot of programs at start up, dumped temp files…you get the picture.

Then I reinstalled itunes from the cd (as opposed to downloading it from the apple site where the recent updater that caused all the problems in the first comes with the new itunes).

The program once again recognized my new nano and continued to recognize my mini and my pal’s shuffle. What a relief!

A little more tweaking is going to have things running smoothly again. And let me tell you from now on it it ain’t broke, I’m not updating it! Lesson learned.

And all your music?

Ah good question. All the music that I downloaded from cd’s originally is there and can be loaded onto the nano and played on itunes. But interestingly music that I purchased via itunes can’t be played or loaded onto the nano without having the newer version of itunes. So currently I am experimenting with deleting one of the purchased albums and then importing it from my back up cd. We’ll see how that goes.

I will do all I can to not go to a newer version of itunes so as to avoid the dreaded ipod updater that caused all the problems in the first place.

Ok so I can definitely reload my backedup itunes music but I can’t purchase from the itunes store using the program that I installed from the cd.

To purchase from the itunes store I need the itunes 6.0 program…humm, so it looks like I won’t be purchasing music on line anymore…at least for the time being as long as the newer version of itunes comes loaded with the problem updater. :frowning:

I had to smile yesterday. I was chatting to our IT guy about the broadcast software we’re using and some of the new features now available.
The virtual ‘carts’ we play have a feature where you can enterinformation about the writer of the track or if the track won any major awards, that kind of thing. The latest version of the software can now also store an image, so you can see the album cover while the track is playing.
We’ve indeed come full-circle from actually having the album cover in your hands while the track is playing…
