HELP!!!
Today I have jumped a 30-40CM (10-15Inch) and my wheel bent…
Do I have to completely replace it, or is there anyway it can be fixed by a bicycle repair shop?
I’m very upset… Any help is urgent, I might commit suicide.
Thanks,
Oded…

RE: My wheel bent
Hi Oded,
It depends just how bent your rim is. If it’s not too bad then yes it can be
repaired but it’ll never be as strong as it once was. Neither will the
spokes. Mind you, if you’re doing drops that are bending your rim then maybe
you should look at getting a stronger one like the DX32, Avro, Halo etc.
Cheers (and congratulations and commiserations),
Neil

Re: My wheel bent
Oded,
Please, DO NOT COMMIT SUICIDE ! Unicycling is so funny and there’s so much
more to explore !
By the way, your wheel looks pretty bent… You seem to have a Taiwanese
uni which might not be designed for such heavy drops. I have one like that
and I also bent my wheel with anly a 6 " drop. I recommend that you plan
buying a Muni or a trial uni, which will be more stronger. Neverthless, If I
were you, I would ask a pro to fix your wheel, there might be something to
do with it but, unfortunatley, maybe not 15 " drops…
Good luck !
Christ.

It looks like you have a United or Zephyr or other Taiwanese unicycle. It probably has a steel rim. Yours no longer has a steel rim…it has a recycleable steel rim and should be taken to a recycle bin. Thanks for the photo. These rims cost $8 to $10 US. If you’re going to build a new wheel I would avoid these cheap steel rims. DO NOT TRY TO REPAIR THIS RIM. It will not be as strong as it was and, as you can see, it was not all that strong at the beginning.
You only need to replace the rim and the spokes. You can probably get your hub laced into a new setup.

P.S. PLEASE DONT ATTACH FILES! Post them to a page and provide a link. This benefits everyone by saving space.

I hope this message gets to you in time. Do not kill yourself over a semi-taco’d rim. Suicide does not become a unicyclist, but as we all know, what’s important is not your final destination but how you got there.
If we had people slitting their wrists because of a taco’d wheel, we’d have probably lost half our uni club.
Oh yea, MAKE SURE YOU WEAR YOUR WRIST GUARDS.
You should replace your rim and respoke with new spokes. Even if you get your local bike jock to straighten you out, your rim and spokes will be going out of true so often it’ll annoy you no end. Both components have been stressed and weakened beyond repair.
I’m not sure how much you weigh, but a 40 cm drop is not much. If your rim can’t take it then it sucks and needs to be replaced.
Check out my tire page for links to 24" rim manufacturers at http://torontounicyclists.tripod.com/tire.htm

P.S. If you’re in Toronto on Sunday March 17, 2002 come see us in the St. Patrick’s Parade. If you’re in Toronto and have your uni come JOIN us in the parade. Shamrocks to you too…
Re: My wheel bent
You need a new rim (at least). No big deal - certainly not enough for
suicide. If you are cost concious, this is a good time to learn how to lace
and true a wheel. Labor at a good bike shop will probably cost more than the
part.
Good luck,
Nathan
I can see the headline, “Warning- Internet Almost Full.”
Actualy, do attach the photo’s- it is great to SEE how you managed to destroy your wheel. How long did it last? I twisted the axel on my United. If you can’t afford an all new rig, I’d consider the Sun Big Fat Rim as a replacement- you’ll break the hub or cranks before that one goes…
I wouldn’t alter the wheel, myself- 'tis a trophie.
Somebody call David a WhhhhaaaaaaaAAAMbulance, and direct him to the user preferances to turn off images and the like. I’m crying in my cereal over here. Ummmm- tears, chocolate soymilk and fruit loops- my favorite.

Attached pictures are a good thing. They only show up inline in the message on the unicyclist.com forums. In the news group and mailing list they show up as a link that you can click to see the pic.
My only complaint is that this pic was over 550 KB. Takes a long time to download for those of us still on narrowband. I’d rather see the embedded pics be no larger than 50 KB or so. But it really isn’t that big of a deal.
I lasted since I bought it, which is not much.
I got my unicycle on 31st December 2001 and started learning how to ride a unicycle.
As soon as I have managed to try (and succeeded) in jumping that high jump, I have seen the wheel bending, at start it was VERY bent, but after few seconds it got a little back to PART of its original shape, and I even managed to ride it back to my car
Which felt very strange, but after you can ride, you can ride a square shaped wheel (my guess)?!
Today it’s Saturday here, and all stores are closed, and I have no replacement or solution.
There are some bicycle stores, which have larger rims but I can do nothing with it, since it won’t feet my fork (is it call fork?).
Anyway, thanks to everybody here, you are being very helpful, at least by sharing your thoughts and ideas from all over the world…
Oded.

Is this also when posting from a news reader directly to the
newsgroup?
(The word “directly” I think reflects my own perspective.)
