My Viscount bumper solution

Here’s a technique I’ve used for over 3 years to keep those bumpers on. It’s never failed… the bumpers have been on since I started it. These are simple bootlaces. Pretty long, probably, I don’t remember.

Any questions?

We’ve had the same success at keeping the Viscount bumpers in place by a different method. The OEM sheet metal screws have fairly worthless holding power after a few drops. We removed the sheet metal screws, tapped the holes in the screw tabs with a 10-32 tap and used machine screws. They have never come apart since.

Its funny you mentioned this, Just tonight I took out my already replaced screws in my viscount seat and replaced them with some that have a wider thread. I also applied a good glop of silicone sealant and have tried to make a nice counfy grip on the front part of the seat. Now I just have to wait for it to dry. Hopefully it’ll be kickass in the morning. I’ll try to post some if I can borrow a digi cam soon

Ok this morning I have found a slight problem with my silicone seat idea it’s not drying… well it has a little but not even close to being solid and it’s 12 hrs later. Is this normal for silicone calk sealant stuff?? The package said it was cool to glop it on so I have a nice 1/2 or so on my seat… I want to ride the thing but now I cant well I can a little if I get help starting… but with no seat it’s still a hard ride…

I’d give it a day or two more. The aquarium sealer that I have - I assume it
behaves pretty much the same as other silicone stuff - says that it cures in
five minutes, fully bonds in 24 hours, and is ready to hold water in 48. It
reeks of vinegar the whole time. If it’s a really big thick glop then it might
take a while.

Interesting idea. Could a full seat pad be built up out of silicone caulk? That
would be cool, as you could shape it however you wanted, leave air pockets
inside, etc. You’d probably have to do multiple layers. Would it be durable
enough?

viscount seats are a pain in the ass, not literaly but the plastic gards are anoying

heyhey

i just got my first unicycle a few days ago (its the greatest thing since the invention of the wheel) . the unicycle that i got came with the viscount seat. the seat is comfortable but after falling and having the seat hit the ground no more that 7 times, the screws came out and wouldnt go back in, so the store gave me a new seat but then it happened again. why doesnt vicount just make the part that the screws are atatched to out of metal.

PS does that shoestring solution really work? it looks like the plastic guards would just slip off.

Yep, the shoe strings really work. Every couple months the laces get loose enough for the bumpers to slide about a quarter inch, so I just pull em tight, tie em off again, and the bumpers move less than when you had the screws on

Well I looked arround and read up a little on silicon calk. Turns out because I put it on so thick I could be waiting arround for a week or so before it fully cures. Ohh well i still think it’s gonna be a longrun fix to my hand, duct tape is only good for so long.

I think you could make a seat more counfy using this stuff… it’s a bit hard to work at first but once you get used to it a light touch and damp fingers you can smooth it out into what ever shape you want. I’m thinking if this goes well I’m gonna try to make a really custom fit.

I the problem with viscount seats bumpers falling off isnt too bad to fix… go to the hardware store and get some screws with a wider thread on it… I havent had a problem with mine since I did that…

I had a similar solution Bruce but not having a tap I use a small nut. The metal the original useless screw goes into is fairly thin and there is plenty of space behind but is often filled with excess foam (easily removed). This pic is not very good but you can see the nut (just).

If you look closely you’ll see that the viscount frame does have metal
tabs that the screws go into. The way the foam is on these it may be
covering the tabs. This can make it look like the screws are just screwed
into the foam.

The problem is that the metal is thin and the screws, when subjected to
impact, tend to strip it out. On the two viscounts I have I just put in
larger sheet-metal screws. This (for me) was the easiest solution and has
worked well so far.

The other ideas (shoelace, nut/bolt, etc.) are probably better but require
(slightly) more effort.

You may be in one of those “arid” States.

It probably needs moisture to cure. Seal it and some water in a big baggie and place it some where warm (not hot).

RE: My Viscount bumper solution

Hi.

We’ve had this problem on odd batches of Viscount saddles. We’ve been
including a replacement set of screws with each Viscount saddle, just in
case. The replacements are # 8 x 1/2", with larger, more sturdy threads
than the originals.

Best regards,

John Drummond
