my new KH freeride!

I just just got my “new” KH freeride this past friday, and rode it saturday! I switched out the maggies from my camo DX, (which I may now be selling) and made a really cool and COMFY gel saddle, using a regular bike gel seat cover. I removed the standard KH molded foam (which I loathe!) and stretched the gel cover over the base, then added a 1" flat, light foam piece then the fusion cover. Just as comfy as my airseat, but no more inner tube “hernias!” The KH came with snafus, but I traded them for my summit trials sealed bearing snafs, which I like better. Here’s a pic. Notice the piano keyboard stretch-band around the brake cable for a little personal touch, and to protect the seatpost from scratches.
PS: I bought it from “PDC” (great, fast transaction!) for $400 plus $30 shipping, and it’s virtually like new! So I basically saved $120 over UDC! Not too shabby.

Nice ride!

I just rode one today and really liked it… then I went and bent the hub on my uni attempting some MUNI… convenient huh? Now I’m shopping… would love to find a deal like that…

Now go get it dirty and scratched. :stuck_out_tongue:

A clean muni is not a loved muni. Give it some love.

Terry–

It won´t be properly broken in–and indeed won´t even be a real Muni–till most of the blue powdercoat is bashed off the sides of both forks, the black on the crank arms is scribed off, the edges of the pedals are ground to mush and hydralic fluid is dripping down the frame.

One thing you might want to consider–The factory wheel builds are not so great on the KH´s so since you´re starting to get on the rocks and do bigger drops and so forth, take the wheelset to your LBS and have them tension the spokes nice and tight. It´ll save your rim.

JL

it was wayyyyyyyyyy to clean and shiny:)

I’ve only ridden it once! But after my first muni encounter with it, it DID get quite dirty and does have plenty of new scratches (which you can’t see in the pic), but it cleaned up nice!

vivalargo, it’s anodized not powdercoated.

Funny you mentioned the LBS thing! The very day of the ride I DID take it to my LBS and specifically asked them to “tension the spokes”, and true the wheel (it’s pretty true already) but it was saturday, and they couldn’t do it in time formy ride! I plan on dropping it off later today for that purpose. Btw, the crank paint is already rubbed off from contact with my shoes! But I still like the way it looks! Believe me, I don’t “baby” my unis when I’m riding!

Well, I wouldn’t be a “true” hardcore muni dude unless I break a few frames A-la John Long! And what’s with UDC and others showing such a pristine and brand new looking KH in their ads??? Shouldn’t THOSE be worn, scratched and beat up looking? They’d probably sell a lot more! I guess the same should go for the rider also? Should look “good and worn in”, weathered and craggy, overweight and bald, (grandpa Walton?) not 20 years YOUNGER than he actually is!

Nope, pretty sure its powdercoated.

Does that work well for you with the foam on top? I kept the gel cover on top so that the center void would be most effective. You may want to try a brake extender http://www.unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=516
It makes it MUCH easier to use the brake. http://www.unicyclist.com/gallery/?g2_itemId=30223

Here’s a pic

The gel pad I bought is flat and has no"void" in the middle. The foam piece DOES have a generous channel in the middle. Works great!

FYI. That’s my unicycle. I can tell because i traded a freeride to PDC, and the better seat clamp.
hope you enjoy it.

Isn’t that the seat clamp that was with it when you had it? For some reason I thought it was a salsa…which it ISN’T.

No! Don’t clean it, ever.
Brush the loose dirt off. Overhaul it regularly so it stays healthy. But never actually clean it.

You’ve obviously got lots to learn about this muni business.

Keep a utility brush in the car so you can brush off the loose dirt or plastered on mud before putting it in the car. That’s all the cleaning that it should get.

Thanks! I needed a good laugh today! And I just passed the ONE HUNDRED HOURS mark of actual IN-the saddle Muni riding! For me that translates to over 500 miles! I’m sure that doesn’t come close to your likely 1,000,000,000,000 hours! We all have to start somehwere! Remember that my KH has only been out ONCE; I fully expect its share of “battle scars” to start adding up!

Wow! You count the number of hours you ride?

Oh and nice muni, it looks strangely similar to mine:)

I don’t count. It’s only an estimate based on the amount of hours I ride each week.
