I tried to combine some of the collective wisdom from distance riders into my new seat. I have been using a double layer UDC pillow and it was not comfortable after 2 or 3 miles. The consensus seemed to be thinner foam, maybe some gel padding. I cut KH foam down to at least 1/2 thickness and made a recess for a gel pad. I used the rail adapter to GB4 reinforcement that I recently discovered. I have only had a chance to be on it for a quick 1/4 mile it felt pretty good. This weekend I’ll be doing some distance, I’ll give a report next week.
I hope that works well for you. I will be waiting for your report.
I have always hoped that factory seat foam would start getting harder. I know that sounds backwards, softer foam is be more comfortable, which should reduce saddle soreness. But the softer the padding is, the further your “sit” bones sink into the padding which makes more pressure for your tender areas to deal with.
I’ve been saying air seats suck for years, looks like people are catching on.
I hated my air seat, and pretty much it’s just laying in the garage. I bought another KH Fusion, which is pretty good, then a week later UDC got the gel seats in and I bought one. As I said before, it allows the sitting pressure to be on your sit bones, rather than on your crotch. THe only thing I am trying to figure out is I am chafing a little, which had never been an issue with the standard KH seat.
Seat Comfort
I am interested who is UDC?
Comfortable saddel this should intrest all
I am currently riding a KH freestyle. Previosly it was the standard SUN torture model. I also have a Torker DX that I did the air modification. Better than the original DX but I tried a 17 mile ride…Not one of my better rides walked about two miles.
I am training to do an indurance ride across Colorado next summer. If I can’t work out this comfort thing the ride will be a bust.
ANY HELP
Thanks

Re: Seat Comfort
UDC is Unicycle Dot Com
Something you can experiment with is the curvature of the seat. The curvature affects comfort and is one of the things I’ve been playing with on my air seats. I find a little less curvature and deepness to the curve to be more comfortable.
One way to change the curvature is to cut a wedge out of the front of the foam as I do here.
Another way is to put a wedge of additional foam or some other material under the foam to lessen the curvature. The attached picture will explain. The black is the seat base. The red is the foam. The blue dot is the wedge of foam or other material under the foam.
I agree- slim, flat, low profile and gel is the way to go. My set up looks exactly like the KH gel in shape (cut down fusion/carbon seatbase). It’s close to perfect for long distance. The next step will be to flatten the foam slightly as John mentioned- I think that will be even more comfy.
More and more bike seat like…
Well after some riding I found that i didn’t get the numbness I got with my air seat. The trade off was my butt was just plain sore after 5 miles. I’m sure some of it is that I weigh 200lbs. I just got a KH Gel saddle today and mounted my GB4 on it and will try it tonight or tommorrow to see if it’s any better.
In search of the perfect seat.
