my new car!

Ooh, congratulations, it looks sharp. Don’t think I’ve seen that one
before (we don’t see a whole lot of imports here in Michigan). What kind
of mileage does it get?

I’m DYING for a shifttronic/tiptronic/whatever the lastest buzzword is. VW
has annouced that the 2002 VR6 will come with a 5 speed automatic with
tiptronic or 6 speed manual. Sweet, if you ask me.

So just get a Porsche now

Sure! Under 25, live within city limits, sports car. Insurance wouldn’t be
TOO bad

It’s like manual shifting for an automatic. You can tell it WHEN to shift
up/down (but it does it automatically if you don’t tell it).

I like the idea, because it gives me the convenience of automatic shifting
in city driving (saves my knee), but gives me the power to down shift when
I like for a little boost of speed.

Really?! I’ve seen 3 or 4 around here. I find it hard to believe that
10-15% of all of those cars are in my neighborhood.

Try insuring a car that’s 5 years older than you, No factory installed
seatbelts, drum brakes, and 500+ horsepower (OH btw it also had a manual
shifting automatic

5 times my insurance was canceled 2-3 weeks after I got it :frowning:

Oh, did you mean only 30 or so were made “in that color”?

-Mike K.

Precisely.

1997, this is the La Costa golf tournament edition.

The point of shifting to 1, 2 or 3 in an automatic is to get more power to
go up hills, or if you’re pulling something. It’s not really to get more
speed like shifting in a manual is. So, you are commonly driving under 55
while shifting, because your car is slowing down as it goes over a steep
hill or something.

That couldn’t possibly be more than we already pay, my fiance has had so
many speeding tickets court dates etc., that by now his is through the
roof. Adding me to it once I have a license will cost us nothing because
it’s already so high :stuck_out_tongue:

So is there a clutch? Or not needed? Most automatics also have 1-3 other
gears (on ours it’s 3, 2, 1) for downshifting when going up hills etc. I’m
always afraid to use them because of the strenuous restrictions in the
instruction book (don’t shift to 3 when going faster than such and such,
don’t shift straight to 2 or 1, etc… blah blah or you’ll seriously
damage your engine).

No, there isn’t a clutch. On some tiptronic models, you just “bump” the
shift lever up or down. On others, there is a button or lever on or near
the steering wheel. With the new VW, it has the tiptronic on the shit
lever. When it’s in “D”, you can move the lever “over” to the right, and
push forward or back to shift. On the Lexus IS300, they claim “An
electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission with manual
upshift/downshift switches conveniently located on the steering wheel.”

Yeah, those aren’t “shift on the fly”, meaning that you shouldn’t use them
while moving. It’s the same concept, really, except tiptronic models do it
a lot better and give you a lot more control.

No actually you should use them while moving, just apparently not
over 55

Who dirve at less than that speed anyway?
