Just ordered up one of those skate/bike type helmets, cause they look so much nicer than that ‘froo froo’ crap that Bell and the others sell.
It came today, and even though it’s Extra Large, it’s WAY TOO SMALL!
It seems to need to be at least an inch longer(Front to Back) than it is.
This really upset me, because the cost of shipping it back (Plus the original shipping) is as much as the helmet!
I know SCHWINN mades a helmet that fits me (It’s got some weird strap system on the back) but then I’m back to those rediculus aerodynamic flamed out blue and silver contraptions on my head.(While I wobble along on my 20 inch unisickle)
Are you sure that they actually sent an Extra Large helmet? If it has an XL sticker on it are you sure that the helmet isn’t mislabeled? Or maybe it is a kids XL and not an adult XL?
Very odd that an XL would be that much too small unless your head is really oddly shaped. I’m guessing that it is either a kids XL or that the helmet was mislabeled.
I ordered a small skater helmet off of amazon (i forgot what brand) and it was too big! Too big! And I don’t have an unusually small head. Crazy. I had to go and try one on. Ended up with a medium.
Yes, I have a very large head, too. I have trouble finding anything that fits. But that’s a small price to pay for a VERY LARGE BRAIN.
Edit: Cutting my hair short helps. Also, I just bought a Giro XL helmet and it fits! It’s out in the car. I’ll post the model tomorrow. If you have a big head, you need that helmet.
i may be wrong, but i think i vaguely recall a motorcycle instructorr informing me that helmets are not internationally standardised sizewise- might this explain anything?
No, with a brain as big as mine, I wouldn’t make that mistake. And I don’t think fat accumulates inside one’s head (except as part of the normal composition of brian matter). I still want to know what’s in there – and Billy won’t tell me.
Well, I figured it out, sorta… tonight I rode a while with the helmet, and realized it must be that my head is longer and narrower than normal.
The helmet sits higher on my forhead than I would prefer, and I am tempted to try what someone mentioned doing; removing some of the foam inside.
But I probably won’t do that; it would compromise the integrity of the helmet,
and then what is the sense of wearing it in the first place?
It will have to do for the time being. When I get into a bike shop with some real inventory, I’ll have the luxury of shopping in the ‘mis-shapen head’ department, and be able to find something that fits my cranium.
Thanks for the input, everyone, and I agree with those who said that we should have a support group for those who don’t fit into the “one size fits all”
Hat/ glove department.
(Yes, XL gloves don’t fit either… and I’m average height!)
