my daughter's first unicycle

dear all, could you give us some advice on what size we ought to buy for lili, who has just started unicycling and is about 1.50m tall?

either a 16’’ or a 20’’ would do fine, i think most people learn of 20’’ unicycles.
If you get the 20’’ you may just need to cut the seat post down a bit, but it depends what type or unicycle you get.
good luck lili, have fun learning!!

cheers! that’s a fab idea, cutting down the post! i was worried as her friend has a saddle that’s far too high.
Lili’s amazingly determined and I’m a very proud mum. Only her first day and she wouldn’t stop until she managed a few meters.

pretty much any uniycle ever bought will require cutting of the seatpost, even on £500+ models. The sizing issue is whether the neck of the frame is short enough that cutting the post wil be effective. 20" unicycles are far more proliferant, and are preferrable as they will allow many years of use as she grows up, it is the standard size for trick performing. A 16" can be grown out of pretty quickly and should only be viewed as a tool for learning for vrey small children.

right! but don’t you think she’ll hurt herself more if she falls off a 20’’ one? sche’s only 9 you see

she will be a mere 2" higher off the ground on a 20" than a 16", which I don’t think is going to make a substantial difference.

no i dont think so, its only a small difference. and as kington99 said, you grow out of 16’’ quicker, so a 20’’ will last longer and will be better for when she grows.

no, of course not, you’re right. i was thinking in terms of bicycles: larger wheels=larger frames, but that doesn’t apply of course. cheers!

i presume her friend has a 20’’ too then, it might be easier to go to another 20’’ rather than a smaller wheel, as it normaly feels strange and different when you swich to a different size wheel.

well i hope your daughter has fun and progresses fast with whatever you choose, if you need any more help with anything, were nice here and will help.

so i gather! thank you so far. I’m very excited about her progress and determination.

Just don’t get a longneck frame

Also a 20" unicycle means anyone can learn on it with some, compared to a 16", ease.

Goodluck to you and your daughter. we could do with more lady trials/street riders if you are wondering what direction to prod her in :stuck_out_tongue:

If you want to provide her with some motivation this video was just made by a group of girls in Europe.
