My 7 year old son just became a rider

I’m posting this because nobody I know appreciates the significance of it. I recently began riding again and my son (and 2 of my daughters) really wanted to learn. He worked at it every day on our deck for about 2 weeks. This weekend he took off. He consistently started making the whole length of the deck - 30’. I then cleared all the furniture from off our other deck that goes around our pool. And by Sun. afternoon he was doing laps around the pool. This ticked off his 10 year old sister. She was doing 20’ rides by last evening. The 13 year old isn’t far behind. Since there doesn’t seem to be any riders around here, I making my own club. Just thought I’d share my excitement with “the community”.

Over and over again i complain about the fact that none of my parents rode unicycle, this is not fair.

Congratulations!

First Step, first launch into the abyss. Having your toddler run across the room into your arms, watching your child ride across the deck. All moments of great pride.

Beware, Very soon they’ll all be better than you.

We ride with a club so we’ve done many club shows. But the girls and I did our first “Unicycler’s DeCuckoo” routine in a variety show at a local fair a couple months ago. Working with your own family has its challenges but is very rewarding.

Keep us posted.

None of them? How many did you have?

Wow, if he sticks with it, he’ll be incredible by the time he is my age.

Congratulations:D
So many non-unicyclists just can not relate to the feeling of pride and accomplishment related to learning how to unicycle or finally nailing down a new skill. Keep up the good work!!!

Well, i’m soooo sorry, english aint my first language.

Hmm I have two sides of me talking at once. My Dark side being mad that a seven year old has beat me to ride and also agreeing with lleberg.

My Light side saying, Good job I wish I could have started learning these skills at that age and it is really good that we get new riders. I hope he sticks with it and Thanks for sharring the story.

Congrats to all your family members. Be ready for significant amounts of jealousy to be seen in the family, even by you! Let me explain… As a parent you are obviously excited to see the kids ride, especially the 7 yr old. It’s exciting isn’t it? At present the older kids are jealous of the youngest doing the longest rides. Hopefully it will encourage them in a positive way to work harder.

Now the tough part for you! You will probably ride with the kids in public and maybe a parade or two. While riding you can do the best tricks in the world and everyone will look at the 7 yr old and say, “Look at the little kid riding!” You of course will be proud of the little one and at the same time will jealous that you did not receive kudos for your riding.

By the way, I know you will get jealous because my 7 year old daughter and I have done 2 parades together and done lots of riding in public. Proud and jealous! That’s me! :o

This jealousy stuff is all in jest of course. I know the parent in you will overcome the jealousy. So far it’s worked for me.

Congrats again on the accomplishments of all the children! Oh yeah, congrats on your accomplishments too!

Bill

He’s out there working on hopping (like his dad) today.

that’s too bad. now they have they mystical and confusing power that is unicycling, so you aren’t better than them NEmore

Re: My 7 year old son just became a rider

Just a jest, as I am sure you appreciate…and not my first language
either.

What’s even odder is I am going to teach my father to unicycle this spring. He promised(with a little convincing IE: Whining and nagging) that I could teach him to unicycle. I have basically tought him everything I know about the technical aspects of unicycling(he has taught me an equal amount about uni’ing too). Hopefully he will launch into it, like he launched into car building. Who knows maybe he will be able to ride at next years CMW…

Came home this friday and he was free mounting and riding down the steep lawn in front of my house. The kid is a uni genius!

Saturday we rode the mile down and mile back together down my lane which has some pretty good hills.

He’s gonna be awesome.

I told him about the UIF Levels and he wanted them printed out so he could work on his next level.

that’s one more of us and one less of them
:sunglasses:

how are the girls doing?

The 10 year old can ride pretty far and has free mounted once or twice. The 13 year old hasn’t done much.

Don’t worry - that’s just because she’s a teenager. It probably isn’t cool enough. My 14YO flat refuses to get anywhere near a unicycle. The 4YO, however, can’t wait till she is big enough to ride the coker.

thats awesome that you taught your kids. I too recently, (and finally) got someone else into the sport. Its really cool to inspire other people to do what you love.
