Music

So what’s your musical fancy? While I posted stuff about the new Kraftwerk album, this is more generalized, and posting vaguely relevant pictures of Brad isn’t welcome. Just kidding, but the point is that this thread has a point, which you can openly talk about to whichever depths you see fit. Music. What music you listen to, like to listen to, are forced to listen to, create; or possibly music you heard in an elevator, or on a plane, or in a car, or from your son Brad. But it’s mostly about what music you listen to, and what role that music plays in your life.

Me, I listen to Kraftwerk, Autechre, and a lot of Death Metal and Black Metal. Bands like Cryptopsy, Deeds Of Flesh, Infester, Burzum, Summoning, Dark Throne, and the list goes on and on. If there are any other unicycling metal listeners, that would be awesome. This music absorbs probably ten times the amount of time I give to eating, and I really don’t eat that much. I aspire to writing music reviews, which will happen soon enough. That’s about it for me.

On the opposite of the spectrum, I like Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand, They Might Be Giants, and Weird Al Yankovic. All three bands are extremely talented, even if their style of music doesn’t give them credit.
I also like Sting, Nirvana, the Beatles, Matchbox 20, Stone Temple Pilots, and a bunch of Brazilian bands that I’m sure you’ve never heard of. So my taste is somewhat varied.

One more band I forgot (although I don’t know how). The Aquabats!

long live METAL!!!

I also like metal, specially power and gothic metal, but i will listen to pretty much everything that doesnt fall under nu...i usually listen to metal while unicycling, what ive heard the on the last couple of weeks: Lost Horizon, Nightwish, Ayreon, and lots and lots of The Gathering (who are great and you should listen no matter what!), i also like progresive rock, jazz and some world music.

Funk, Jazz Funk, Jazz, Soul, and any other good music. Is anyone else here into the same kind of music? I’m trying to discover more bands.
I like:

  • Directions in Groove (an Australian funk band)
  • Charlie Hunter
  • Tower of Power
  • The Brand New Heavies
  • James Brown
  • Greyboy Allstars
  • Addison Groove Project
  • Heaps more…

I’ve been having fun composing ringtones on my new phone. Now I’ve got a list of:
Directions in Groove - The Favourite
Spanish Flea
Hava Nagila
Tower of Power - Pick up the Pieces
Part of the Super Mario theme song
The Electric Light Orchestra - A Fifth of Beethoven

They’re great fun!

Andrew

The Death/Black Metal crowd are usually a bunch of elitists who only go for what is true especially in their own genre. Good to see another metal head, but while I don’t have the a-hole attitude of an elitist, my musical tastes still fall in line with them. In the end, Death and Black Metal seem to branch off from Metal as a whole, leaving most with mainstream metal acts extracting the novelty from that which most consider the defining elements of Death/Black Metal, few appreciating the true underground artists, and some just confused and not sure why they’re confused.

Power Metal is probably the only thing that could be considered as carrying on the actual Heavy Metal spirit of previous generations of Metal. I’m just not into it though, or older Heavy Metal acts either. I think what attracts me to Death/Black Metal most is something that in the end isn’t even Metal based, though I do love the Metal-ness like any metalhead. One that listens to Cryptopsy would have to, hehe.

As for Gothic Metal, all I vaguely know is a band called Gehenna. Heard of them? Supposedly their early stuff is good, and described as “gothic”.

The most mainstream Death Metal artists I’m into that I could mention that if you’re a metal head you have to be into, are At The Gates pre SOTS, and Morbid Angel pre Covenant.

Some varied tastes indeed already, hope to see more! Unicyclists are usually an odd bunch, which is a compliment.

Ah jeez I didn’t look at where you are from, there are some Brazilian metal acts I know of. Heard of Sarcofago? Mortem? Not necessarily my cup of tea but talked of highly by people I know. Sure it’s another country, but I’m an American! Also, Averse Sefira just toured Brazil if you’ve heard of those guys.

well although brazil seems pretty close, its actually very far when refering to metal, living in venezuela sucks in that sense, all the music has to be imported, and i guess yours too, but since the us have a larger group of people who want that music as compared to here, the prices are considerably cheaper, i mean right now we would have to pay 30 USD for an average mainstream cd, add to that the fact that we can currently buy anything outside because of an currency exchange control, and the prices rocket boost...that leaves tours absolutely out of the question, helloween was coming this week suppossedly, and they cancel the date within one week of the anouncment. as for the bands, i sure will be checking some of that, if heard morbid angel, as a friend of mine is very much into black and death, and i think i should have gone that path based on my background, but for some reason i ended up in a more melodical thing, lets see if i can broad my metalness…have you heard nile?

NEGATIVLAND

Skankin’ Pickle, Goldfinger
etc.

The list goes on, and on, and on, and on…

(sorry if my musical genres are a little off. I just listen to the music, not classify it into groups)

Dave Lowell (uni57)

Punk:
Dead Kennedys
Anti-flag
Ramones
AFI
Pennywise
NOFX

mostly Dead Kennedys

various artists:
The Beatles
Beastie Boys

Rod Stewart

Of course! I absolutely love Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren Ka, their first album, and I actually saw them on tour in Pheonix about a year ago. Their later stuff doesn’t really interest me much, but their first album is amazing. It definitely takes the best aspects of Death Metal and Grindcore by fusing elements as well as using a uniquely epic Death/Grind style to their composition. Great band, great album, highly recommended.

Flogging Molly

Well here’s mine.

Some Good Australian Bands I like such as… Cold Chisel, Daddy Cool, The Easybeats, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Ted Mulray Gang, Flash and The Pan, Rose Tattoo, AC/DC, The Angels, Savage Garden, The Bee Gees and more.

The solo artist I like such as… John Paul Young, (He lives near me by the way) Stevie Wright, Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Slim Dusty (Now Deceased) James Reyne and More.

International Artist I like such as… Leann Rimes, Phil Collins, Roy Orbison. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Brittany Spears, (I know I’m a softie for her) Madoona, Rowan Keating, ABBA, Pilot, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton and Bob Segar.

There’s more I like but I ran out of ideas.

David

I’ve had Earth Wind and Fire recommended to me as a good funk band. Could you describe their style briefly please?

Cheers,
Andrew

Come on Dave,

4 of thoes bands are out of your home state, and then alot are from NYC too. You must of heard of some of them… If not you really should turn that radio off and get some local music
