Hi everyone…so far my doc film on unicycling is almost complete. I’m still doing rough cuts but it’s not too soon or too late for me to be thinking about the score. I’m looking for ORIGINAL, royalty free music, instrumentals preferred, to use in my film. The genres can be rock, hardcore rock, hip-hop, electronic, or funk. Basically anything that would go well with unicycling and people talking about the activity. I also have a “history on the unicycle” segment, so I guess vintage ragtime piano music might sound good there. The film will be 10 to 20 minutes in length (not certain yet of TRT), and I already have 2 original songs for the titles and credits: “Unicycle Like REMIX” (by Jason Checkla) and “I’m On A One-wheel” by Dogbowl.
I like this sound:
But I don’t limit it to that style alone–this is a documentary covering the sport in freestyle, street, trials, muni, and distance. Terry (Unigeezer) is the main character of the film, too!
So if you’re a musician or you can hook me up with some free royalty-free music in exchange for screen credits (and I"ll send you the final DVD, too), please send me an email. I need music before April 14th…and I’d like to get a variety and a few tracks. It would be cool if all the music came from the community! I will also need to send you art release forms. Contact me either here or at my website www.josephneigh.com
If I get multiple entries, I can’t guarantee I’ll use any one of them–I will pick the ones that fit the story the most.
Hi Joe. I think there’s at least one person on our forums who writes original instrumentals, but I can’t remember who it is! I even used a couple of his tracks for some older videos. I’m in the process of searching for them, so hopefully I’ll find them and get his name/usename, then send it to you. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll see this thread and chime in!
I’m also wondering if the thousands of youtube songs in their “audioswap” library might be ok to use. There are actually some really decent songs and instrumentals there.
Goodness. I feel awful. Please forgive me. The part of “ORIGINAL” that I didn’t understand was the all caps font and the vowels. The part of “royalty free” I didn’t understand was the missing hyphen.
Thanks Terry…it’s great music but I don’t think it would be fitting for this doc…it’s a little too dark and heavy (not that I don’t like dark, heavy music!).
No problem Joe. I kinda thought it might not be the right fit for your doc. One of the most challenging parts of making my videos, is finding music that fits well, but without overpowering or overshadowing the footage, and of course, something that won’t be muted by YT!
If you have a small budget available, you might want to check out www.istockphoto.com, which just added royalty free audio. They have a sister site called pumpaudio.com (they’re all owned by Getty), which I’ve used in the past with great results, they’re more expensive but the music variety and caliber are excellent.
Well, I’m currently working on Terry’s segment (Unigeezer)…it sure is getting DIFFICULT to edit when I have no music. Don’t get me wrong–I do have some music for my documentary but not for all parts. If you have any suggestions for ORIGINAL, royalty-free rock instrumentals (or any style that goes well with extreme unicycling), then please let me know!
You can find some bands that you might like on myspace and wherever, contact them and ask. I’m sure a lot of people would agree if you ask nicely, any exposure is good.
Yeah, so? It’s called networking. Either way, I need music and I appreciate ANY help I can get. If you can’t help, then don’t be a smart-@$$ with irrelevant comments. Peace.
I know lots of people use Shadowville Productions beats in their uni vids. It says on the website that you can download and use them for free if you aren’t using it for profit, and if you are, you can buy the beat for limited or exclusive use. It seems their “synchronization license” is what you’re looking for, it’s $99.99 on their website, but that’s just for one beat. Maybe probably not what you’re looking for but juts thought I’d though that out there.
Like I was saying, if you were actively looking for music, you’d find it. You don’t need help, you need to look. The Internet is chock full of ORIGINAL, royalty-free music.
Yeah, I found a lot of music but I need SUGGESTIONS. I actually have a good amount of instrumental rock music right now but there is one thing I need at the moment. Perhaps you could help me by making a suggestion.
I found a website that has royalty free, FREE, public domain music from various eras. But I’m not to knowledgeable on scoring something with music I don’t know much about. Since you seem to act so smart, perhaps you could tell me: what would be the best song I could piece with a woman “dancing” on the unicycle (ie: flowing movements, pirouettes, etc.)
She said she listened to Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” while she was being filmed but I obviously can’t use that song due to rights. So what I need is something that would go well with ice skating / dancing…got any ideas?
I could tell you what I think sounds good, but then your video would be partly my interpretation, and possibly only appeal to me.
Have you done any work on that scene, or are you just sitting on a pile of clips and a pile of music? Why not experiment with various songs and find what works for you? How else are you going to learn about scoring if you don’t practice it yourself?
If you need a more quantitative approach, find the tempo and time signature of the Susan Boyle song you reference, and look for music with similar characteristics and dynamics.
