Has anybody else read this book? Its written by John Aristotle Phillips and David Michaelis, and tells of how John designed a working Atomic bomb in the seventies for a physics project at Princeton university. At the time he got heaps of attention and his moment of international glory. Anyway its a really good book, very interesting and eye-opening (Pakistani spies and other dodgy characters try to get the design off him). The reason im posting about it is because John Aristotle Phillips rides a unicycle.
Here’s a little section from the book:
“I went out and bought a unicycle. I’d never ridden a unicycle before, but i quickly learned how to maneuver it. By the end of the summer, I could hop on my unicycle, boogie over to the grocery store, buy my dinner, and then ride back with two bags of groceries in my arms.”…“You have to be a little crazy to ride a unicycle. After all, there’s only one goddamn wheel that persists in shooting out from under you at every turn. Whenever I rode the unicycle around the Princeton campus that fall, I got into a crazy mood. I would ride it to and from all my classes. I rode circles around people walking on the paths. I raced dogs. The unicycle gave me this whacky, slapstick frame of mind.”…“When sudents began expecting me to be whacky because I was on a unicycle, I began acting more that way. I became a completley different person when I was riding the unicycle. The world turned into my circus. Anything was posssible.” - Mushroom - The Story of the A-bomb Kid, John Aristotle Phillips & David Michaelis
I think he too got the unicycle bug all of us have contracted, and even though he didn’t have the more extreme side of it we have today its still bought out a different side in him. So if you haven’t allready read the book, if not just for the short section on unicycling, you should, because its a cool book
So yeah anybody else read this book? Or anything you wish to share?
gotta go for dinner now…
