Muni or Trails?

I am 12 years old, and I am a level 4 rider. I like freestyle a lot but I think MUni and trails is also very cool. I have a couple of questions about them though:

  1. What is the difference between MUni and trails?(and don’t say one is better)

  2. What is the recommended starting age for MUni or trails? I plan to do just freestyle for another year or so, then maybe get into Muni or trails.

  3. What terrain is consider MUni? Trails?(I know it kind of sounds like a stupid question, but I’m very curious)

That’s all. If you could answer any of these your help would be appreciated.

Personally, I don’t like the idea of sticking with only one thing. (Others
may disagree, which is fine.) I like to be working on skills in as many
areas as possible. I may be working on freestyle tricks, but if I ride
past a bench, I’ll probably try to hop onto it. Or I may be riding in the
dirt when I feel the urge to work on my wheel walking or gliding.

I have found that although there certainly differences between muni
and freestyle, both are unicycling, and therefore, they tend to
compliment each other. Even if you don’t have a muni, or easy access
to trails and trials, just considering them when working on your
freestyle will help when you
do. And testing your skills on the trail will help strengthen them when
working on flat ground.

As for age, I don’t see why it should matter. I wish I’d started riding
years ago.

I started unicycling when I was 12. For years, I didn’t try to improve my skills- riding around was enough for some reason. A couple years ago I put a fatter tire (20x2.25") on my uni and started hopping around. Just this year I finally went on the mountain with it. (Now I’m 20) I’m not level 4 now, let alone when I was 12.

I see no reason to wait to do either Muni or Trials. You aren’t too young. Think about it, you will be awesome when you are my age.

The differences:
Muni: usually offroad, mountain biking trails. You need a tire with some grip. Any incline is much harder than riding on smooth ground. Little bumps that make you fall over are littered all over the place.

Trials: usually onroad stuff. Often one does trials in a skatepark. More stunts. Often hopping-type stuff like hopping up and down curbs or stairs.

Good luck with your unicycling,
Caleb

I agree with Jeff completely. I met many riders at NUC last summer in the
8-12 year range who were fantastic at Muni. My 5 yr old and 7 yr old kids
are learning now. What does age matter? Of course you will be careful and
use your head, no matter what your age, hopefully. Wear your gear when
appropriate, don’t take unreasonable risks, and all that. If muni or
trials appeals to you, and you are level 4, I’m sure you are doing some
already. What are you waiting for? Better equipment? Don’t wait! I met
kids at NUC who blew me away on basic street unis!

  1. What is the difference between MUni and trails?(and don’t say one
    is better)

Muni is basically any kind of rough terrain or off-road unicycling where
one of the objects is to get from point a to b (a trail, a 4wd road, or
just a mountain, for example). While getting from point a to b, you might
do “trials” type stuff (e.g., jump over logs, up onto rocks, gap from one
surface to the next etc…)

Trials focuses on simply riding over ANY surface possible (e.g. up stairs,
over a car, a park bench etc). I’m sure better definitions are available,
but you get the idea.

I think someone should mention the possible spelling/understanding error:

Trails vs. Trials

Trails are what you ride on when doing MUni. They are one in the same
(assuming you are MUniing on a trail–if you’re not, it’s an IMBA no-no).

Trials, i.e. “trials and tribulations” is the sport of riding over
difficult obstacles. MUni and Trials can be (and often are) combined, but
in a specific Trials situation you are usually riding very short distances
and spending lots of time on a small number of obstacles.

Of course the best age to start is now.

In which case it is even more true that “today is the first day of the

HI i am a 15 year also a level 4 rider i am manly focust on muni and trails riding i would have to agree with everyone GET ON THE TRAILS and ride there is no to young or to small just not determend enuff when i first started i fode on my friends 20" street uni so what i am trying to say is just go ride i garente you will love it now to your questions

  1. What is the difference between MUni and trails?(and don’t say one is better)

muni is like mountian biking just going through trails up big hills and over mountains and such and asuming that trails is a spelling error and you mean trials then trials is hoping onto and over things and hoping from one thing to another or doing thing like pedal graps (jumping up and catching the corner of something with your pedal the hoping from there on to said item) on to things

  1. What is the recommended starting age for MUni or trails? I plan to do just freestyle for another year or so, then maybe get into Muni or trails.

there is no starting age just when you decide to go out

  1. What terrain is consider MUni? Trails?(I know it kind of sounds like a stupid question, but I’m very curious)

muni terrain is generealy any tuff rocky trails up hills is fun stuff like that trial there are all sorts of things to do stcked up pallets are are very fun and easyer to come by and things like wire spools nearly any thing can be used for trials

               hope this helps you joey

ps:i live like 45 minutes from you in framingham mass
