MUni meets Mountain Bike

I just received my KH 24 in the mail and I have put it to good use already. I’ve put a good 20 miles on it already (riding mostly beginner/intermediate single track).

I have encountered many mountain bikers on the trail and I’ve been pleasantly surprised that most have been very polite. In fact, many look at my unicycle with interest and want to see me ride it.

I was curious if this is what many of you have encountered. Do mountain bikers generally share the trail?

Josh

Good experiences!
Its the Road Riders who are sooooo RAD, that they wont even smile or say hi. (Sorry to digress, I shouldnt talk crap about them, just seems they have… well whatever).
Anyway, very positive experiences with MTB and hikers!

Yeah, mountain bikers and hikers are always super nice. Even if they don’t say anything, they pretty much always yield to you

Usually they will stop completely and move off the trail. Almost too polite. But sometimes it’s a problem when they come up from behind. You want them to pass, but they often want to ride behind you and watch. A little communication is needed so you don’t each have different expectations…

Thanks for the information. Glad to know that many people share my experience.

road riders are not mean, they are just going too fast to appreciate a unicycle. when i coker on bike trails, almost all bicyclists turn thweir heads back to me after they passed, but they dont slow down. when im cruising at 21mph, i wouldnt look back at much of anything.

Hey, I’m a road rider! And I do say hi!

Thanks, but many road riders I meet do appreciate the uni, as long as they are not moving…

My experience with MTBers is 99% positive. Most are very appreciative, and some make comments about feeling inferior after seeing me on one wheel riding the same trails they are riding. One morning this week, I was riding a short uphill section and a MTBer had stopped at the top of the rise. I UPD’d, walked back a little a rode up. I thought the guy was interested in seeing me ride. When I passed him, I said “Good Morning”, and he said “You’re welcome” in a snide tone.

Hikers seem to fall into 3 categories: 1) amazed and impressed, 2) unwilling to acknowledge my presence, 3) think I am insane and destined for intensive care. I mostly get the inane "where’s your other wheel in urban environments, or within the “cooler zone” on trails.

I have also possitive xp. with them. It happens that some doesn’t care about you (just with full speed passes you) but sometimes even i don’t care about some who say “hi”… It happens! [Sorry for my english, it’s not so dark as i wrote :P] Sometimes it depends on my mood or something. But it happens very rarely, usually i say “hi” back, so you can’t really judge someone if he greets you or not once, except if you meet him several times and he never greets.
But as i said, they usually greets you, sometimes they ride with me few km and ask me some questions, how it works etc. and it’s always nice to see their surprised faces.
I also take part of lots of bicycle uphill races with 29"guni and I’m faster than many bicyclists and they always say “nice”, “go, go, go…” or “great job”. Sometimes it’s also funny when i pass some bicyclist and he thinks “wtf. a unicyclist is faster than me?” and he starts pedaling very fast, but usually gives up in 100m

I was riding on a paved rails to trails path last week when a road cyclist passed me by at a good clip but turned and said “very nice very nice”. It was good encouragement. I haven’t made it to trails yet, but everyone I’ve interacted with has been really positive for the most part.

Yeah, most folks are pretty nice, though some are too cool or in too much of a hurry to be bothered. I find that the more I’m seen on the trails by certain riders, the more likely they are to watch, say hi, or ask questions.

I used to meet with the local MTB group on Wednesday nights and give impormptu uni lessons, but there weren’t enough takers, so I stopped going.

I have a 20" Sun that I keep on permanent loaner status, hasn’t been back home for at least six months, just moves from person to person every month or so…

Mostly positive experiences with MTB’ers for me. Occasionally neutral/no comments, and a few looks from those who think I’m crazy, but nothing negative.
