Multi-purpose tyre?

I’m just getting used to my new (well, new to me) 26" Pashley Muni, and
am after some tyre advice. When I got it (last week) it still had the
stock tyre, which I’d heard bad things about. (In fact, it felt okay on
the road to me.)

Yesterday, I ventured into the woods for the first time. It was great fun
(now I see what all the fuss is about!) and I could see that a better
off-road tyre would be useful, so…

Tonight, I, erm, “borrowed” a tyre from my brother-in-law’s MTB - a nice
chunky downhill thing (Panaracer “Smoke” 26 x 2.1) and went for a ride to
try it out. Sure, it felt okay great from the tarmac, but on the Tarmac
I couldn’t help but feel like it was veering off to the left all the time,
and Blue (as he is now called) subsequently felt harder to control.

Now, I have no plans to be changing the tyre every time I change terrain,
but am expecting that the majority of my riding (for a while at least)
will be mostly on tarmac. However I don’t want to rule out riding off
the beaten track occasionally…

Anyone got any recommendations on a decent, and usable,
multi-purpose tyre?

Sorry, don’t know what happened there. What I meant was:

“Sure, it felt great off the tarmac,”

Smokes are fine off-road tyres, can’t fault them myself. If you want
something a bit better on tarmac but still off road capable (although not
that good in mud), try some wtb velocoraptors, hard wearing tyres which
actually grip on hard pack. I don’t like them myself but then I ride
offroad a lot in thick sticky mud.
