Mudguard?

I took the dog & the Coker for a ride in the local forest the other day and
before long, owing to all the rain we’ve had, my thoughts turned to fitting
a mudguard (one of the clamp-on-the-seatpost type) to combat the damp behind
syndrome I was experiencing: that tyre throws up a lot of spray! anyone
tried this?

Incidentally, another big advantage of a coker I discovered is that you can go
through really deep puddles without getting your feet wet, even a stream at one
point  However, this advantage soon became academic when I had to ride the
last 5 miles in the pouring rain and got absolutely soaked. I think I need a
cab…(with wipers)

I find the coker excellent fun off road as long as you don’t have to change
direction or speed too quickly, but I think one must be taking a bit of a chance
with the robustness of the machine. It gives the dog a good workout though,
after 10 miles he starts to lag behind somewhat !

Re: Mudguard?

If you are riding through wet stuff on the Coker you should watch for rust on
that big steel rim. Water can get inside the wheel through the spoke holes and
through the valve hole. Water that gets inside the wheel will stay in there a
long time and start a rust problem.

If you ride in the wet a lot you should remove the tire occasionally and clean
out and dry out the rim. A light coating of a lubricant (WD-40, Tri-Flow,
etc.) would also be a good idea inside the rim especially around all of the
spoke nipples.

Are you sure its only 10 miles… not 15 , Mr “its only another couple of
hundred yards” Cooper. Any one else remember jerrys estimates on last
years BMW ride?

see you soon sarah

I noticed this problem on the solar-system ride - my rucksack was rather
splattered by the end of the day. Miark however had a clean back as he was using
this sort of clamp-on seatpost. I don’t know if he’ll bring it to BMW, but if
not he’s the person to ask about makes/sizes etc.

Oh dear, so riding around the beach and in the sea could be seen as a potential
disacster for my Coker then ? mmm, maybe I’ll clean it later… on the subject
it makes a great beach cruiser on the ‘harder’ sand and impresses surfers…
sorry no pictures.
