We use Verizon DSL service here at home (just trying to be more like you Raphael) and are having trouble with MS Outlook or Outlook Express maintaining our email settings. The same problems occur with either program.
Logon information: Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
My server requires authentication: Yes
Always connect to this account using: Local area network
When I simply close then open the program during the same session, the settings remain the same. But when I shut down and power back up, the following changes occur:
Incoming mail server: localhost
username: yoopers/incoming.verizon.net
I can’t receive email until I change the settings back to original. Any ideas why is this happening? After five phone calls, Verizon has no clue and blames Microsoft. Any guidance would be appreciated.
So, your going into ‘tools’, then selecting ‘accounts’, then selecting ‘properties’, and selecting ‘use this account when receiving’, then selecting ‘server’ tab, and using ‘POP3’ and the info ‘verision’ gave you for server names,
(dont select SSA if they dont say so)
and finally clicking "Ok’
and it wont save your entries …?
(be sure the server name ‘prefix’ is correct. Most ISP’s use the same prefix now …
That sounds about like the path and settings I’m using. I have only Outlook Express at the moment. The POP3 and SMTP settings are correct per Verizon, i.e., incoming.verizon.net
Yep. When I power down (perhaps just log off…haven’t checked that one), then power up and go back into Express, the settings have changed. It’s perplexing.
Do you have any content filtering software installed on the problem computer?
I had a similar problem with IE when I was using some content filtering software. It would reset the IE connection settings every time I started it. The settings were re-configured to use localhost as a proxy. That way when IE requested a page it was actually requesting it from the content filtering software which could then check if it was allowed. If I altered the settings to go direct things would work until I exited IE and restarted. I did not use OE on that computer but I wonder if it would have hijacked OE settings also.
Norton Anti-Virus reads your email. I no longer use email on my home PC, so don’t know if the latest version of NAV causes problems, but I used to have some hassles with earlier versions and email settings. It would run my incoming mail through its filters and then put them in my inbox. This involved some changes in the settings as you have described. If you’re running an anti-virus program that works with Outlook and Outlook Express, see what that product’s instructions may say on the subject. That’s all I can think of.
Also you can go to Microsoft’s support site and see if you can search on the topic to find a tech support article that covers your problem.
