moving on

well, ive had my 20" savage for about a month now…and id say ive progressed
rather well. i can comftorably ride to work on it…i can freemount, and
travel for quite a while now…

i plan on moving on and getting a coker (or other larger wheel) and a
giraffe… funds being limited, which should i go for first? is riding a
giraffe harder then a standard uni… i figured a coker 30" or something might
suit me…or a 5 footer giraffe…

im also working on idling, does anyone have some input for mastering it? i saw a
guy at BJC2k idling in the parade on a giraffe for quite a while before the
parade actually started…

any help is greatly appreciated…

cheers,

Re: moving on

Jay,

Giraffes are not really harder to ride than normal unicycles just scarier. When
it comes to idling a giraffe I think it is easier if any thing. Pointers for
idling are:

  • look ahead
  • pedal for 9.0 to 3.0 o’clock through the bottom
  • leave your shoulders in the same position (so you lean back when you pedal
forward and lean forward when you pedal backwards)
  • use your hips
  • sit on the seat

A good way to learn is to ride forward and do a single idle then carry on,
repeat this until you are confident with one idle. Then try the same process
with 2 then 3 etc.

Good luck

Roger

Giraffe is easier than big wheel. Big wheel will get you places, and giraffe
will get more people to ask “how’s the weather?”.

Good advice from Roger. I would add that though your general pedaling pattern is
between 3:00 and 9:00, those are the maximums of your pedal stroke. You don’t
have to pedal all the way up to those positions (and try not to go past them),
and a smaller pedal motion may be more comfortable for you, as long as you pass
through the bottom position each time.
