Get a mini-giraffe. It’s easier to freemount.

Heed Harper’s wise words,
See unicycling.org,
Practice frequently.

Go for it. Aim to ride not to climb. Visualise.
Freemounting a giraffe is a good feeling.
You’ll get it. Tell us when you do.

I took my giraffe out last night to practice freemounting. Greg’s suggestion
made in the thread linked to above, that is to make the seat lower than you
would if you were not attempting a freemount occured to me for the first time
(even before I just read it).

And it’s incredible…

It didn’t help. 30 or so attempts and not a one successful. Thus far, including
last year, I’m about 1 for 200. (Man, I should have savored that one a little
more).

Anyone think I should quit smoking and lose some weight?

By the way, the details Greg provides are very apt. The angle of the pedals,
ones distance from the uni (how extended the leg on the tire is) all make a
difference; pay attention to them.

How would I know you ask? Hey, I can tell when I’m close.

By the way, I like Connie Leaverton’s method of mounting her giraffe. Get two
drunk Austrians to hoist you up.

I practice mounting my 5 footer in my yard (with grass). Although I can’t ride after I get on it, it helps me to get the feel for getting on it, and I don’t get hurt when I fall
