The toughest, yet most rewarding, UK mountain bike challenge is back for its 14th year and promises not to disappoint.
The challenging 24-hour race is part of the brand new ORIGINAL SOURCE Mountain Mayhem, a festival of events that takes place from 17-19 June 2011,
It’s a 24-hour cross-country cycle race. We usually enter as teams of four, so it’s basically a relay. Laps are around 7 or 8 miles, quite hilly but not technical. Lots of grass (annoying and draggy) and forest singletrack. Can get very muddy if it’s wet (which is pretty common). You ride your lap, pass over to your next team mate, wait until your next go then ride another lap - and repeat until the 24 hours are up.
You need to be reasonably fit (obviously) and able to ride safely and predictably (there are a lot of bikes on the course going much faster than us). You also have to be at least 18 years old on the date of the race.
It would also be good to get an international team entered again this year.
Registration opens at the end of Feb, on a first come first serve basis, so if you’re interested, please get in touch so I can arrange teams.
It’s usually completely 36er-able, let alone 29er-able! I think they want to avoid injury with large numbers of bikers riding overnight, so there aren’t any big bumps or drops, just twisty singletrack and fire road stuff.
I don’t know that I’ll make it this year again, but it’s great fun!
I kinda fancy this. I was thinking more like I’d want a 29er for it rather than whether a 29er would be ok. Somehow I don’t think I’ll have a 29er by then
Just BUMPing the thread to the top, in case there’s anyone else interested. Registration forms come out tomorrow, so it’s pretty last minute.
Joe, Roger, Rob N and Pete have already formed a team, I’m just trying to find out if I’ll be needed to make up a second team or not, because I really don’t mind whether I do the race or not.
If anyone is definitely up for it please PM me as soon as you can.
