Motorised monowheel

This link to a motorised monowheel manufacturer/seller was a sponsored link at the top of this site. And it’s even Dutch, but I had never heard of it before.

Klaas Bil

In the NL edition of Metro or Sp!ts was an article on it last saterday.

But why does this one have extra wheels?

If it was’nt snowy that day, I would have ridden this one in Michigan last year.

if you accellerate quickly, can you do a loop in the wheel?

Yes, In exactly the same way as if you brake too hard the inner ring locks to the outer wheel and you travel with it. The technical term for this rotational ‘stunt’ is gerbilling.

The extra wheels (or anti-gerbil bars/wheels) are used to stop these rotational effects. By having a set of wheels or a bar outside the diameter of the wheel but attached to the internal frame, these contact the floor if the frame moves in relation to the ground under acceleration or braking and stop it from moving too far round.

Loose.

Thought I’d revive this old thread so I didn’t have to make a new one.

Here’s a V-8 monowheel crashing, and it looked pretty bad when he lost control. Not sure how fast he was going but it looked like he was moving at a fairly high rate of speed. Happens at about the 3 min mark. Maybe a rounded roll bar of some kind, to the rider’s left and right, would add protection in the event of a crash like this? Also, his feet are on the ground a lot, so I’m not sure whether he’s using them to stop, ala fred flinstone, or to help keep him upright.

^ i motorcycle now…but i’d never ride one of those death traps. or any other motorized uni that can do like 25+ mph.

the braking on that thing is pathetic, he was barely able to brake and it started a wobble.

So, like am I missing something, or is the WheelSurf an excellent way to wear out you shoe soles?

I saw the Youtube and both riders were dragging their feet to stabilize their rides. The Wheelsurf didn’t appear to have footpegs or floorboards to place you feet on, anyone else notice that?

PS “Gerbilling” = priceless!

I would buy 1 and then do some “minor” modifications. :stuck_out_tongue:

um yeah look at the website again there are footpegs in the pic

As someone who used to have gerbils (and the requisite wheel for them to play in), the term makes perfect sense. Wonder why they didn’t call it “hamstering?” Because hamsters are slow. Gerbils, when they’re in the mood, will accelerate up to warp speed and then sometimes just stop, making one or more unpowered revolutions. I’m pretty sure ours did it on purpose, once they figured out it was fun.

Those things just look dangerous. Without improved braking those things should not be on sale.

Not enough context which your refer to.
The commercial one I mentioned in 2005 never went on sale by that company.
The wheel of Kerry McLean you only can buy if he thinks you deserve one.

I’ve once had the honour to visit his workshop. He’s a fine man, and certainly not stupid.
However, wherever he’s mentioned others always will post his failure (without even knowing what truly happened).
It must be frustrating when you make and ride such a pure craftsmanship!

Most non riders probably say similar things about our unis!:stuck_out_tongue:

There are ways to make it work. Under braking, there would really need to be some sort of an ABS type system to stop gerbilling while letting the body move back as far as possible to keep the weight to the rear.

An emergency option for heavy braking would be to have landing gear type wheels which pop out when the brake load exceeds what the anti gerbil system can handle.

Of course now it’s getting techno and complicated which will turn many folks off, but it could work.

…which is why i’ll always stick to 2 wheels when going motorized :stuck_out_tongue:

or 3.

I would still want a monocycle someday though.
