Most (uni) climbing in one day?

Steve Relles - 3522’ (1073m) vertical ascent - Adirondacks, NY, USA, - 2005/06
Tom Blackwood - 6083’ (1854m) vertical ascent - Fidalgo Island, WA, USA - Sept. 13, 2008
Corbin Dunn - 4755’ (1449m) ascent - Mount Diablo -
Tom Holub - 4754’ (1449m) ascent - Mount Diablo -
Joe Marshall - 6069’ (1849m) ascent (muni obviously!) - Derbyshire, UK - 30/05/2009

I’m surprisingly close to tom, except I hopped up the stairs at the top.

Also, Mike did Mt haleakala in Maui. Sea Level to 10,000’.

here in the alps it’s usual to do an uphill from 1000 - 3000 meters in a daytrip (sometimes also hiking and carrying the uni).

You misspelled “I walked up the steep part at the top.”

Hey Steveyo,
Whiteface looks like fun. If you ever want to do it again I’d really like to be part of it. I’ll totally make the trip from Texas to be there.

Funny thing was, the 1900m (6233’) ascent wasn’t the hard bit - it was the fact that it was at 5150m (16900ft), so breathing was a problem - also the ferocious head winds, the sub-zero temperatures for the whole of the 13.5 hour day and the fact that it was all off-road!!! I couldn’t stop there though, as I had to descend 2740m (8989’) under the same conditions… The hardest day of my life…, so far!

Steve

The Belgian unicyclist Lode de Paepe climbed Mt Ventoux four times in a single day on 16 May 2007. The second ascent was on an unpaved trail, of which he walked 4 - 5 km because of the trail condition. On the last ascent he got into a thunderstorm, he climbed the last 1500 meters (along-road meters, not sure how much vertical that was) on foot, with the unicycle in hand, because of gusty winds estimated to go up to 100 km/h. Total ascent was 6000 m, including two stretches on foot (which together were maybe 500 - 600 vertical meters). He did all the descents by car. His website with more details (in Dutch) is here: http://www.lopa.be/index/4xMV/2007-05-16_4xMV.html

I climbed Lake Mountain the other week, clocked up about 1000 vertical metres of ascent. If you click on the Show button (top left) and select elevation it shows the profile of the climb.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Lake-Mountain306690

A pretty steady climb, it was easier than many of the other big climbs I have done. The gradient has a lot to do with the difficulty rather than the sheer number of vertical metres. I don’t have to worry about altitude, this is Australia:)

I rode back down to the start after reaching the top.

Well Eric (from the RTL Mojo team) is doing it this year. Max is rumored to be wanting another shot at it, too. I had the record until Roland beat me by 24 seconds.

I may do it next year, but RTL fell on our anniversary last year, and Whiteface is on our anniversary this year. I can’t miss it two years in a row, so I’m not in for Whiteface. They have another race there in September, which is spectacular because it’s right in the brightest autumn foliage time. Maybe we’'ll think about that one, eh?

Of course, Mt Washington is the Big Kahuna in the NE US (7.6 miles, 4700’ vert.), but they charge $350 to enter! I never hacked up the cash for that race, but Eric’s signed up for that one, too. AspenMike holds the uni record there.

@Steve Colligan: I read the whole UNI mag writeup. Dude, you are one sick mother.

I completed the Dragon Ride (Medio Fondo) in Wales yesterday. That was 130km and, if the organisers are to be believed, 2300m of climb (and descent). I didn’t have an independent way of checking but my legs are prepared to believe it.

Regards,
Mark Wiggins.

LOL! I forgot about that part. I guess I should subtract 100’

corbin

Thanks for digging up that number. That was def. my biggest day, and done on the shortest cranks I’ve ridden, too! (110s)

It looked like Lode de Paepe was in the same (around 6000) ballpark as some others. To put his achievement in perspective, I’ve added the number in ft (although somewhat against my principles).

is there a record set yet in the other direction? most downhill in a day? and i’d prefere one done on singletrails and not in a park going down the same trail all day, what i mean is not using a same trail? just wondering… also planning something nice

On the fourth day of our recent Alps crossing on MUni, we did 1344 m uphill and 1928 m downhill. The difference, btw, is mainly caused by us taking one powered uphill of some 500 m. http://x-alps.blogspot.com/

on the “grischa muni challenge” at the second day (8 hours) we did 4113meters of downhill (of course using the cablecars. but it was not allowed using the same trails), that was the most a team did in this competition. but i know in 12 hours and choosing the right trails and transportations system there most be more…but how much more?

I am a mere pup compared to these climbing giants. I don’t know what my biggest climbing day was, but it was probably one of these:

  • Two times climbing Mt. Diablo, at about 3300' or 1000m. On the second climb, I did that nasty steep part at the top. :) Maestro, you rode up that with 110s? Massive props!
  • I did a Tom Holub-led ride up Mt. Tam, which may have been higher than Mt. Diablo. Tom?
  • In 2007 I completed the ride around Lake Tahoe, which has to be at least 3000' of total climbing in 72 miles; possibly the most I've done in a day.
BTW, total climb should also give some credit to steepness or distance of ride. Aspen Mike's recent climb of Pike's Peak (8000') definitely belongs on the list being copied in this thread!

Downhill:

  • For me, probably the helicpoter-MUni ride I did with various other forum members last December 23, at around 1600m.
  • Kris Holm and Nathan Hoover did about 10,000' descent from White Mountain Peak in California in 2002 or so.
  • I don't know if Aspen Mike rode down Mt. Haleakala after riding up it. That's slightly over 10,000' from summit to beach, in about 36 miles.

Like Turtle, we also did a lot of downhill on the Grischa Muni Challenge. On our first day we did 3825m (12550ft) of descent - all off road and mostly single track. We also did 2126m (6975ft) of ascent that day, but some of that was walking due to the steepness and impossible to ride terrain!

You can read all about the Grischa Muni Challenge here.

No, Mount Tam peaks at 2571’, and the parking lot is lower than that. But you get extra points for it being off-road. (I’ve actually never ridden it on road on a unicycle; might as well take the Railroad Grade if you’re there).
