Give me a break! Are they going to sue Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo now
too? I hate this kind of bullshit…
Charging that HBO’s The Sopranos represents an ethnic affront, a group of
Italian-American lawyers in Chicago, organized as the American Italian Defense
Association (presumably because Aida challenges sopranos), has filed suit
against the producers under a rarely invoked section of the state constitution.
The section condemns “communications that portray criminality, depravity or lack
of virtue” in a racial, ethnic, or religious group. A spokesman for AIDA told
the Chicago Sun-Times that it is not looking for monetary damages against Time
Warner Entertainment, parent of HBO, but simply wants a jury to determine that
The Sopranos offends Italian-Americans.
would seem to me that’s a violation of free speech. Don’t know the specifics but
that’s the picture I get from that snippet. oh well. I think the sopranos are a
great show. Very entertaining, and the only real bad anti Italian American stuff
is the crime aspects. Half of the show revolves around the family situation etc.

If I were them I’d be very careful. Movies like The Godfather and shows like The
Sopranos are a big part of Mob culture. They cherish Mario Puzo, for example.
