More NUC photos!

Well I’ve finally gotten through some minimal post-processing of the
photos I took at NUC and uploaded them to a NUC 2001 album on ofoto. View
them at http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?m=60089109103&n=807510868.

As I told many of you, if you want a few of these photos in jpeg format
email me and I’ll get them to you. Unfortunately, I took most of these in
640 by 480 resolution for web use. They make great 4x6 prints through
ofoto but I found that 1600x1200 res would have been the way to go for
maximum flexibility. Next time.

I haven’t captioned these yet but I’ll work at it (mostly names).

Enjoy!

I’ve scanned through the NUC albums and they look great!

What’s with the geared up red giraffe though? It looks very well
engineered.

That was built by Joe West, an inventor from Michigan. I don’t know much
about Joe, other than that he’s brought some interesting unicycles to the
last two NUCs. This red one was a variable speed giraffe. Unfortunately it
wasn’t quite finished, so was not ready to ride at NUC. The mechanism
worked, but it needed some tweaking to get the belts lined up to where
they could be tightened sufficiently for actual riding. When finished, a
lever on the front of the unicycle (connected up to the seat) will change
the ratio in some of the pulleys to gear the ride up or down. Sounds
fascinating!

Joe also brought a little “motorized unicycle on a stick.” This was a
wheel with a pair of pegs, and a long post with handlebars at the top. The
handlebars included a brake and throttle lever. The cycle was powered by a
small electric motor, which unfortunately didn’t have the speed or power
to really propel anybody.

But the cycle was built to mount a gas powered leaf blower motor, which
would up the power a lot. The fuel tank will be the post, and when
finished the thing should be an interesting challenge to learn to ride!
